The lighthouses standing in the median along a portion of 37th Avenue in Hobart will be coming down as the city and Hobart Township look to make safety and aesthetic improvements along its northwest gateway.

Mayor Brian Snedecor said the city is working on removing the lighthouses, which he called obstructions that could be struck by motorists, from the median.

He said the landscaping will be reviewed to determine what will stay and what will be removed.

“Some businesses need to clean up their properties too,” Snedecor said.

Hobart Township Trustee Tom Silich complained about the condition of the roadway, which also is known as U.S. 6, to the Hobart Board of Public Works and Safety at a meeting.

Silich said a lot of movement has since been made. He said Lake County personnel would do striping along the road and would send persons in the work release program to clean up debris on the side of the road.

“It's a good start and a good plan,” Silich said. “We need to protect this end of town.”

In other matters, the board of works approved a $15,500 quote by Ellenberger's Maintenance Services in Hobart to restore a roadside swale in the 5100 block of East 70th Place.
