Myles Garrett is expected to miss at least four games because of a knee injury that requires arthroscopic surgery.
The Rams will place Garrett on injured reserve. The two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year was ineffective in the Rams’ 27-7 loss to San Francisco in Australia on Thursday night.
Garrett, who played 62% of the snaps in the season opener, will be eligible to return in Week 6.
“I wasn’t the player that I wanted to be, and I feel like I wasn’t the player I’ve been before when I’ve stepped onto that field,” Garrett said. “I’ve got to do what I can to get back to that.”
The Rams sent edge rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks, including a first-rounder in 2027, to Cleveland to get Garrett in the summer. Three-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald then returned from a two-year absence to rejoin the Rams, but he didn’t play in the season opener.
Garrett missed a lot of practice time in training camp because of his knee, but the nature of his injury wasn’t known. Coach Sean McVay said Garrett had swelling in his knee. It’s uncertain how Garrett injured his knee, if it occured during a specific instance or accumulation of wear and tear.
Garrett played all 17 games three times in his last five seasons with the Browns and played 16 games in the other two seasons.
watson struggles in return to browns
Deshaun Watson made his first NFL start in 693 days and couldn’t have asked for a better start. The trouble was it lasted only five plays.
Watson had the Cleveland Browns moving on the opening possession Sunday against Jacksonville with a couple of dump-off passes over the middle that put them on the Jaguars 33-yard line. But on second-and-5, Watson didn’t see Foyesade Oluokun slide over in coverage, and the linebacker leaped to pick off the pass.
That was the last of Cleveland’s hopes in what quickly turned into a 34-10 rout. The next time the Browns got a first down, when Watson scrambled for 3 yards, there was 5:18 left in the first half and the Jaguars already were up 24-0.
Watson finished 16 of 22 for 205 yards, numbers that looked better than they were because of a 46-yard touchdown pass to rookie Denzel Boston with 1:52 left in the game.
ravens shine in Minter’s debut
Jesse Minter couldn’t have asked for much more out of his debut as coach of the Baltimore Ravens.
The offense started fast and finished strong. The defense kept the Indianapolis Colts at arm’s length. The special teams produced big plays, and when the 41-23 victory was over, Minter celebrated on the sideline with his coaching mentor, his father, Rick, a senior defensive analyst on the Ravens’ staff.
For Baltimore’s first new coach in 19 years, it was the perfect start.
The Ravens didn’t look like a team still getting acclimated to a new coach and three new coordinators.
Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson took advantage of strong field position as the Ravens ran 15 of their first 17 plays in Colts territory. He threw for 229 yards in the first half, hooking up with Zay Flowers five times for 150 yards and a nifty 54-yard catch-and-run that came in the middle of six first-half scoring drives.
Minter’s defense limited the Colts to 112 total yards in the first half and 251 for the game. The Ravens forced two turnovers.
