GREELEY >> Berthoud sophomore Avery Tychsen is picking up right where her sister, Brooklyn, left off.

A year after Brooklyn ended her high school career with a 15th-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament, Avery finished 10th at this year’s event, which concluded Tuesday at Boomerang Golf Links.

Tychsen followed up the 83 she shot Monday with an 85 on Tuesday, and her two-round total of 168 was a stroke ahead of a pair of Mullen golfers who tied for 11th with a 169.

Her score also helped the Spartans to a fifth-place tie as a team. The Spartans shot a collective two-day total of 533. Steamboat Springs finished with the same score. Holy Family won the 3A title with a score of 476.

Tychsen’s score was the best of the Spartans’ four golfers. A birdie on No. 17 pushed her into the top 10, and she was able to maintain her spot even with a bogey on 18.

“It was good,” Tychsen said of her play in the tournament. “It was a little scary with the wind today, and I thought the weather would not be the best for us. But I played well, and I think that all the practice here these past weeks have been good and helpful.

“It feels really great and awarding because I’ve just been working towards this all season, and having some bad rounds, like a couple of weeks ago, kind of scared me for that … working with my coaches helps me a lot, and getting here feels very great.”

While it was Tychsen’s first state tournament, it was the last for a pair of her teammates.

Senior Malia Sylva just missed making the top 10. Her two-day score of 171 was only three strokes behind Tychsen for the 10th-place spot, and she finished tied for 14th. Sylva and fellow senior teammate Rosie Hirai were the only returners from last year’s Berthoud foursome that finished eighth at the state tournament at The Olde Course.

Sylva had a pair of birdies in her final round, on No. 3 and on No. 12. Even though she followed up her 84 Monday with an 87 Tuesday, she still finished in the top 15 after finishing 19th at state last year.

“The first day, I think I did really good,” Sylva said. “I mean, I left a little meat on the bone, so I was really excited to attack it on the second round. The conditions weren’t ideal, but I gave it my all, so that’s really all I can ask for, just out there having fun for my last high school tournament.”

The Spartans’ third golfer, Hirai, improved on her 100 from Monday with a 94 Tuesday. Windy conditions did little to help golfers improve their scores, but Hirai made it happen for her. Berthoud’s fourth golfer, sophomore Madie Kuntz, finished with a two-day total of 206 and tied for 49th.
