Those of us who are old enough remember “Baghdad Bob,” the colorful (and later iconic) spokesman for Iraq and President Saddam Hussein during Desert Storm.
Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, the Minister of Information, would blatantly lie about the war — in one instance insisting that the allied forces hadn’t even reached Baghdad while bombs exploded behind him and tanks rolled into the airport.
Donald Trump has his own Baghdad Bob in Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary. She has been caught in lie after lie, but continues to feed them to the American public while taking softball questions for right-wing influencers who are part of the press corps.
In an interview on Tuesday with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade, Leavitt was asked about Trump’s acceptance of a $400 million luxury jet — called “a palace in the sky” — from Qatar, a clear violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution, scholars said.
“Do you worry that if they Qataris give us something like this that they’ll want something in return?” Kilmeade asked.
“Absolutely not,” Leavitt said, “because they know President Trump and they know he only works with the interests of the American public in mind.”
The backlash was immediate on social media, where one user asked: “Did she actually say that with a straight face?” Asked another: “Is her nose growing?” Still another: “If anyone ever deserved a raise for lying, Leavitt should be the first in line.”
This is similar to the lie she told on Friday, May 9, when she said: “I think it’s frankly ridiculous that anyone in this room would even suggest that President Trump is doing anything for his own benefit. He left a life of luxury and a life of running a very successful real estate empire for public service ... this is a president who has actually lost money for being president.”
The watchdog group, Citizens for Ethics connected dots in a Tuesday tweet:
“1. Trump Org announces new development in Qatar
2. Trump admin announces stop in Qatar as part of first foreign trip
3. News breaks that Qatar plans to gift America a $400 million plane
This is all unprecedented and quite obviously corrupt.”
Even MAGA knows that Trump has used his office to enrich himself, his family and his cronies. They just excuse it. And many have protested the jet.
In his first term, Donald Trump raided the United States in ways no president ever had:
He stayed in his own hotels, so the Secret Service would have to pay him to protect him.
Leaders from foreign nations, who came to Washington, D.C., knew that they had to book rooms and events at his hotel to gain favor or an audience. In fact, when Trump unexpectedly won the presidency in 2016, many scrambled to rebook at his Washington hotel. In addition, members of the Republican party and elected officials made the same arrangements as a sign of loyalty: They paid financial tribute to Trump, hoping for favors or appointments, or even pardons. When Trump sold the hotel, the GOP bookings dried up.
And in the second term, the corruption has been even more insidious: Trump has increased his and his family’s wealth by an estimated $3 billion with crypto schemes, social media stock offerings, foreign real estate dealings and more.
Even top MAGA influencers — many who also are crypto proponents — have applauded Trump’s bold leverage of the presidency for his own wealth and to further pad the bank accounts of billionaire cabinet members (with alleged market manipulation) and advisor Elon Musk (with government contracts).
Others have said they feel betrayed.
But the bottom line is: They all know Trump is grifting big-time.
