A jury trial is underway in Oakland County for a substitute teacher accused of sex crimes against children.

Timothy Daugherty, 61, of White Lake Township, is charged with six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, alleged to have happened at Spring Mills Elementary School in Highland Township where he worked as a substitute teacher for Huron Valley Schools.

The alleged victims, all female, ranged in age from 9 to 11 at the time the crimes are alleged to have happened.

Second-degree criminal sexual conduct is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

According to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s office, the first allegations against Daugherty were reported to law enforcement about a year ago and he was immediately suspended from his substitute teaching position.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Yasmine Poles is presiding over the trial.

Daugherty is out on bond — $7,500 set at his arraignment last September.

A statement issued last year by Huron Valley Schools says, in part: “HVS takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and the district has cooperated fully with law enforcement as they conducted their investigation and will continue to do so…HVS recognizes the importance of maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment and are committed to upholding the trust students and their families place in us.”
