ROSEMEAD — When things got tough for the Bishop Amat boys basketball team, it relied on its freshman phenom, Aiden Shaw, to spearhead a comeback in a crucial Camino Real League showdown with Bosco Tech on Wednesday night.

Shaw’s big night helped lift Bishop Amat to at least a share of the league title with a 48-44 victory.

Bishop Amat (21-9, 7-1) can win its first league title outright in more than 20 years Friday when it hosts last-place Cathedral in the league finale.

Shaw, who averages 17.9 points, finished with a game-high 24 points on 6-of-13 shooting to pace the Lancers.

Bishop Amat trailed by seven points in the third quarter and was down four points heading to the fourth.

Shaw tied the game at 42-42 with a pair of clutch free throws with 2:48 left and the Lancers took a two-point lead with under 30 seconds left to close it out.

“I was feeling a little nervous because we were down,” Shaw said. “But we had to play together to come back and get the (win).”

Bishop Amat head coach Brendon Ertle commended the team’s defensive effort.

“Our guys’ resiliency and effort on the defensive end really showed,” Ertle said. “Things went up and down a bit, and for us to keep our composure on the road, stay tough on defense, stay disciplined…(I’m) really proud of our guys.”

In an impressive defensive display, the Lancers held Bosco Tech (13-10, 4-2) to its second lowest point total of the season.

“I think it’s just a team effort, and a couple of little tips here and there,” Ertle said jokingly. “But it’s mostly our guys’ effort and attitude towards wanting to play defense and wanting to win games for us. Defense usually does a pretty good job of winning games.”

From the opening tip, it became apparent it would be a back-and-forth first half. The Tigers began to separate themselves thanks to a 14-point second-quarter performance from guard Darius Benitez.

Bosco Tech took a slim lead, 25-23, into halftime.

Benitez played like a man on a mission, finishing with 24 points, including 19 in the first half, on 10-of-13 shooting.

Bishop Amat held Bosco Tech to just 19 points in the second half as the Lancers made key defensive adjustments. The Lancers were able to hold Benitez to just five points in the second half.

Shaw had eight points, six of which came from free throws, in the final quarter to complete the comeback effort for the Lancers.

Bishop Amat’s Rayshaun White had 10 points, with seven of them coming from inside the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

Although the Lancers trailed for the majority of the second half, Shaw said the message to his team was simple.

“We just had to play with pace and had to play with some defense,” Shaw said.
