SEASIDE >> The Seaside Police Department is continuing regular service out of a trailer after the headquarters on Harcourt Avenue was flooded earlier this month.
The department announced the station had flooded Dec. 8 and there was significant damage to the building.
“This will not affect public safety in any way,” read a statement on social media.
The main station is closed until further notice and the police are currently operating out of a trailer next to the Seaside Library, which is next to police headquarters.
“Because the police department sits so low in kind of a basement space, when that backup began we really took the brunt of the entire building and it seeped up through our drains throughout the police station in a rapid manner, flooding about 90 percent of the police department,” said Seaside Police Chief Nick Borges.
The flooding at the station happened about a week before a storm hit the region, bringing powerful winds and causing power outages, downed trees and ponding on roads.
The Seaside Police Department continued work normally, working out of their make-shift headquarters.
Borges said there are now multiple mini-stations across the city.
There is no exact timeline on when the police will get back to the station.
“They removed everything and are preparing for a demolition of the floors and affected walls,” Borges said. “Then they’re going to prep it for new flooring and sheet work. The estimate is late January or February, but could go into March.”
