Sophomore Nareni Carre Martinez scored twice for Santa Cruz High’s girls soccer team, and the Cardinals edged crosstown foe Pacific Collegiate 2-1 in the teams’ physical nonleague match Wednesday.

Freshman Elzada Wood assisted on Santa Cruz’s first goal, which gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the half, and sophomore Joy Roberts assisted on the second goal, which came in the 58th minute.

“We have a young team that is starting to find its identity and confidence is growing,” Cardinals coach Poul Schiebel said. “I’m proud of the way the team is handling a tough preseason schedule, filled with top division teams. Looking forward to league.”

Sophomore goalie Ari Flores made seven saves for the Cardinals.

Senior Anna Walker-Edwards scored for PCS (3-3-0) in the 44th minute. She finished with seven of the Pumas’ 23 shots.

Sophomore goalie Hailey Woelfel, a transfer from Scotts Valley, played in her second game since gaining eligibility.

The Pumas were trying to maintain their momentum after routing Monte Vista Christian 6-1 on Monday to push their win streak to three matches.

“Both teams had their chances,” Pumas coach Kelly Binger said. “It was a little sloppy. I was a little disappointed, after the way we played MVC.”

Binger was hoping for a free kick to be awarded after a vicious collision took place just outside of Santa Cruz’s penalty box, but no call was made.

PCS was called for 10 fouls and Santa Cruz was called for three, the coach said.

“The girls know each other, some of them play on the same club team,” Binger said. “It got physical, and it got a little chippy. And refs are refs.”

PCS hosts North Salinas (1-7-0, 0-2-0) at Depot Park in Santa Cruz on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Santa Cruz (2-4-1) plays at Harbor (0-6-0) to open Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Pajaro Valley 5, at Monte Vista Christian 2 >> Valeria Acosta scored all five goals for the Grizzlies in their Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division win in Watsonville on Wednesday.

Acosta has 23 goals on the season, and a school-record 67 in her career.

Scarlett Gomez had four assists, giving her a team-leading total of 14, and Leilani Vazquez also set up a goal.

Goalie Denis Magallon made six saves for the Grizzlies.

Pajaro Valley (10-1, 2-0) plays at Alisal (4-5-0, 1-1-0) in Salinas on Friday at 7 p.m. MVC (3-5-1, 0-2-0) hosts the Trojans on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.

Boys basketball

Aptos 66, Wilcox 48 >> Isaiah Ackerman totaled 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and six steals, and the Mariners won their nonleague game in Santa Clara on Wednesday.

Aptos led 32-29 at the half and 49-38 after three quarters.

Nick Tovani made four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points and four assists for Aptos (10-4). Center Owen Warmerdam had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Mariners coach Brian Bowyer praised Ryan Solorio, who score nine points, for playing “great defense.”

The Chargers dropped to 7-2.

Aptos hosts Scotts Valley (6-7) to open SCCAL play on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

At Soquel 36, Christopher 33 >> Senior guard Nico Ramirez scored seven of his team-high 10 points in the second half, and the Knights pulled off the upset in nonleague play Wednesday.

Soquel senior Nolen Westfall scored five of his eight points in the fourth quarter, and senior D’Rell Hopkins scored six points.

The Knights led 19-16 at the half. They outscored the Cougars 12-8 in the fourth quarter.

Senior center Jaxen Robinson scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter for the Cougars (11-2), a CCS Division I finalist last season.

The Knights (6-7) play at San Lorenzo Valley in Felton to open SCCAL play on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

St. Francis 68, at North Salinas 64 >> Nash Horton had 29 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals to help the Sharks win their PCAL Mission Division game Wednesday.

“Nash played a heck of game,” Sharks coach Robert Gomez said. “They doubled him all night when he got the ball, and he still scored 29. He carried us when we struggled.”

Juniors Robert Gomez and Jacob Jimenez each scored 14 points for the Sharks (11-3, 2-0). Jimenez also had six rebounds, four steals, and two assists.

Gomez made two free throws with six seconds left to extend the Sharks’ lead to four points and seal the win.

Trevon Kubulan made three 3s and scored 17 points to lead the Vikings (6-7, 0-2). Andre Lizaola scored all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter.

St. Francis hosts Soledad (6-8, 2-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

At King City 75, PCS 52 >> Garret Koontz scored 35 points, but the Pumas were unable to keep pace with the Mustangs in their PCAL Cypress Division opener Wednesday.

Ian Bulfin had eight points and eight rebounds for the Pumas (2-5, 0-1).

PCS’s perimeter defense wasn’t at its best: The Mustangs (2-9, 1-1) made 16 3-pointers.

PCS hosts North Salinas (6-6, 0-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Girls basketball

Watsonville 62, at Alvarez 32 >> Freshman Isabella Alvarez had 22 points and eight steals, and the Wildcatz won their PCAL Gabilan Division game Wednesday.

Junior Leilani Yasin had 12 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks for the Wildcatz (12-2, 2-0). Junior Stephanie Martinez had nine points, five rebounds, and five steals.

Watsonville plays at Salinas (7-6, 1-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.

At St. Francis 43, Palma 41, OT >> Guards Liliana Whitmeyer and Maya Calfee were forces as the Sharks’ knocked off previously unbeaten Chieftains in PCAL Cypress Division action Wednesday.

Calfee and Natalie Stott each made a free throw in overtime — the only points in the extra stanza.

Whitmeyer, a freshman, finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Calfee, a sophomore, finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Kiera Grio chipped in with four points, four rebounds, and three steals for the Sharks (9-2, 2-0).

Aveena Ducsin scored 19 for the Chieftains (7-1, 1-1), and Frankie Rossi added 10 points.

St. Francis plays at Seaside (1-9, 0-1) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

At Rancho San Juan 38, MVC 36 >> Sophia Cortes scored a team-high 15 points, but the Mustangs fell short in their PCAL Mission Division opener Wednesday.

Lex Petersman and Mia Malaspina each scored six points for MVC (4-9, 0-1), which missed its final three shots.

Sophomore Alyssa Hernandez scored 17 points for the Trailblazers (5-6, 1-1).

Cabrillo 81, at Gavilan 15 >> Freshman guard Sydney Chesnut made nine 3-pointers and scored a game-high 29 points, and the Seahawks opened Coast Conference South Division play with a rout Wednesday.

Freshman forward Gabby Brooks scored 22 points. Sophomore guard Jade Crum scored 12 points for the Seahawks (12-6, 1-0), and sophomore forward Renee Parker scored 10 points.

Cabrillo led 48-5 at the half.

Freshman guard Isabelle Cline scored a team-high five points for the Rams (2-15, 0-1), all in the first half.

Men’s basketball

Cabrillo 88, at Gavilan 56 >> Sophomore guard Max Parmigiani made four 3s and scored 18 points for the Seahawks in their Coast Conference South Division opener Wednesday.

Zavier Sims scored 15 points for Cabrillo (9-8, 1-0). Freshman guard Walzel Evans scored 14 points, and freshman guards Skylarr Redwood and Sulliman Koko scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Cabrillo led 40-23 at the half.

“We played our most complete game of the season,” Seahawks coach James Page said. “Our pressure really bothered them, we were able to control the pace of the game and it was good to see us handle our business on the road.”

Sophomore wing Bricen Buciak made four 3s and scored a game-high 24 points for the Rams (3-14, 0-1). Sophomore guard Jayden Fowler scored 10 points.
