A woman told Griffith police she shot at a man after a fight where he allegedly dumped her mother’s ashes, according to court records.

Kierra Sword, 23, was charged Dec. 7 with criminal recklessness, Lake Superior records show. An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday with orders to be held on a $1,000 bond. No one was hurt.

Police were called Dec. 2 to Park West Apartments, 1832 Park West Blvd., for a shots-fired call. They found two bullet casings in front of an apartment building and a trail of blood that led back to Sword’s apartment.

Witnesses said they heard arguing before the shooting, before a woman appeared to hit a man’s car with a knife, the affidavit states.

After the shooting Sword hid both weapons in her bedroom, then left the area for a while.

Sword went to the police station when they left contact information following a search warrant, where officers seized a gun and second knife.

She told police that she invited the victim to her apartment. By the time she got home, he appeared drunk in the apartment commons, charges state.

She said he pushed her into the apartment “tweeking,” or under the influence, the affidavit states. When they started fighting, he pulled her hair.

She pulled out a knife to “scare” him. Sword went outside to bust out his windows “because he threw my mama’s ashes,” the affidavit states.

She went back inside and grabbed the victim’s gun and fired twice at his car tire. She wasn’t trying to hit him, she told investigators.

Detectives later told her the gun was reported stolen in Chicago.

The victim did not respond or cooperate with the investigation.
