Athletics second baseman Zack Gelof is scheduled for surgery on his right hand today and will begin the season on the injured list.
Gelof suffered a hamate bone fracture and Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles will handle the procedure. Manager Mark Kotsay made the announcement at spring training Sunday.
The infielder was hit by a pitch from Cleveland reliever Paul Sewald on Wednesday and underwent an MRI exam on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Gelof, a second-round selection out of Virginia in the 2021 amateur draft, batted .211 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs with 25 stolen bases over 138 games in his first year playing regularly.
Top prospect Max Muncy, 22, will open the season on the major-league roster.
Orioles’ Henderson to open on IL >> Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson will begin the season on the injured list because of a mild right intercostal strain.
General manager Mike Elias told reporters on Sunday that he hopes the IL stint “will be measured in days instead of weeks” for the 2023 Rookie of the Year, who hit .281 with 37 homers and 92 RBIs last season.
The 23-year-old Henderson departed a Feb. 27 spring training game after one inning because of discomfort on his lower right side.
The Orioles visit Toronto on Thursday for opening day.
McClanahan has inflamed nerve >> Tampa Bay Rays ace Shane McClanahan will begin the season on the injured list because of an inflamed nerve in his left triceps.
Manager Kevin Cash provided an update on McClanahan a day after the left-hander departed a Grapefruit League start against Boston in the third inning. He had been slated to start for Tampa Bay on opening day against Colorado on Thursday.
Cash told reporters in Florida that the prognosis was “probably the best news we could have heard.”
McClanahan, who turns 28 on April 28, is coming back from his second Tommy John surgery on Aug. 21, 2023.
Mariners release Haniger >> The Seattle Mariners have released Mitch Haniger after the veteran outfielder was hampered by left shoulder soreness during spring training.
Haniger, 34, was in his second stint with Seattle. He has a $15.5 million salary for this season after agreeing to a $43.5 million, three-year contract with San Francisco in December 2022.
The Mariners, who re-acquired Haniger from the Giants in a trade for Robbie Ray last offseason, announced the move on Sunday.
Royals release Stripling >> The Kansas City Royals have released right-hander Ross Stripling and catcher Luke Maile after they opted out of their contracts.
The 35-year-old Stripling and 34-year-old Maile were in camp on minor league deals.
Stripling played for Oakland last season, going 2-11 with a 6.01 ERA in 22 games, after spending 2023 with the Giants.
Rockies, Guardians make swap >> The Colorado Rockies traded outfielder Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians for Tyler Freeman on Saturday.
The addition of Freeman provides increased flexibility for Colorado after it lost Thairo Estrada to a broken right wrist. The 25-year-old Freeman has made big league starts at second base, third, shortstop and center field.
Jones is looking to bounce back after he was limited to 79 games last year because of a back issue. He hit .227 with three homers and 28 RBIs. He had a big year in 2023, batting .297 with 20 homers, 62 RBIs and 20 steals in 106 games, finishing fourth in balloting for NL Rookie of the Year.
