A woman involved in a two-car crash early Wednesday near the Mac-Arthur Maze died when she jumped from a freeway overpass after the wreck, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened about 4:40 a.m. on westbound Interstate 580 on the transition ramp to eastbound Interstate 80, according to the agency. One of the vehicles ended up on its roof after overturning, according to the CHP.
CHP spokesman Officer Adib Zeid said the original crash did not injure anyone. One of the drivers wandered from the crash scene and jumped off the overpass, he said.
“It was probably a 20- to 25-foot fall,” Zeid said. “We are unsure why she jumped. We don’t know the motivation for that at this time.”
Authorities did not identify her, pending notification of her next of kin.
The woman was able to get up after landing and get herself to Hannah and 34th streets, “a good distance from where she would’ve landed,” Zeid said.
Responding medical units found her on the ground there and gave her first aid, including CPR, he said. She was pronounced dead there.
The crash blocked the transition lane, but the CHP was able to clear it relatively quickly. They did not issue a Sig Alert for severe traffic.
