


French Open honors Rafael Nadal who won there a record 14 times
PARIS>> Rafael Nadal stepped out into Court Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday to the sort of unending adulation, thunderous applause and chants of his nickname, “Rafa,” that greeted him for years as he accumulated a record 14 French Open championships, only this time he was being honored at a farewell ceremony.
Nadal, who retired last year, sheds tears during the tribute. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray all showed up to bid their old rival farewell.
This all came 20 years to the day since Nadal made his debut in Chatrier at age 18.

NEW YORK>> Shohei Ohtani faced hitters for the first time since elbow surgery, throwing 22 pitches at Citi Field before the Los Angeles Dodgers played the New York Mets.
The two-way superstar pitched to five batters in a simulated setting. He isn’t expected to make his pitching debut for the Dodgers until after the All-Star break in mid-July.
Padres right-hander King lands on 15-day injured list
ATLANTA>> San Diego right-hander Michael King, who was scratched from Saturday’s scheduled start, was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
Man City, Chelsea and Newcastle secure Champions League spots
MANCHESTER, England>> Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle secured the remaining Champions League places on a dramatic final day of the Premier League season.
Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest were the big losers. Villa was left with a sense of injustice after having a goal ruled out against Manchester United. They eventually lost 2-0.
Real Madrid confirms Xabi Alonso is returning

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.>> Freshman star Chloe Humphrey scored four goals and older sister Ashley Humphrey had four assists and North Carolina’s defense dominated as the Tar Heels capped an unbeaten season with a 12-8 win over Northwestern for their fourth NCAA women’s lacrosse championship.
