Erik’s Deli to host Dine For A Day Scholarship Fundraiser

Join the San Jose State University Alumni Association Santa Cruz in supporting their scholarship program for Santa Cruz area students to attend SJSU by purchasing food and drink at Erik’s Deli, 1664 Soquel Drive, July 20. Store owner Greg Newman is a proud SJSU alum of the hospitality management program.

The Santa Cruz chapter supports local students attending the university through renewable scholarships. Seventeen students from Santa Cruz County high schools and Cabrillo College are currently funded, with five to six new awards given annually. Proceeds from fundraisers and a portion of memberships go directly to the scholarship program, which boasts over a 90% graduation rate. Soroptimist Club meets July 8

The Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea will hold its club meeting July 8 at 4 p.m. at United Way of Santa Cruz County, 4450 Capitola Road, Suite 106. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Club members will present and vote on fundraising activities for the new 2025-26 fiscal year and select leaders for the club’s four pillars, including membership, fundraising, programs and public awareness.

Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. County Democratic committee seeking members

There are two seats open on the Santa Cruz County Democratic Central Committee in Districts 1 and 3. A vote will be taken among committee members or their alternates at the July 23 General Membership meeting to fill open seats from Supervisor District 1 and District 3 by appointment. Monterey Bay Dog Training Club obedience class

The 59-year-old nonprofit Monterey Bay Dog Training Club Inc. is offering Dog Obedience training classes starting July 8 at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, 2601 E. Lake Ave. in Watsonville, and July 10 in Capitola at the Mid-County Senior Center, 829 Bay Ave.

Buddhist Temple holds Obon Festival dance practice

The Obon Festival is coming, and the Watsonville Buddhist Temple is holding Japanese folk dancing practice for anyone who would like to participate in the festival, which takes place July 20. Hot Rods on the Green car show returns

Come have fun checking out classic and custom cars from around Santa Cruz County and beyond at the 18th annual Hot Rods on the Green classic car show happening July 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Twin Lakes Church, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive. There will be vintage, customs, classics, muscle cars, Camaros, hot rods, street rods, modern muscle cars, trucks, VWs, dragsters, motorcycles and more. A fun event for the whole family, featuring a live DJ, kids activities, food vendors, a hula hoop contest, a Red Cross blood drive, awards and a raffle. Tickets are now on sale for Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s 2025 Summer Festival which includes four plays: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare, the musical “Into the Woods” by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, “Pericles” by Shakespeare and George Wilkins, and “’Master Harold’ …and the Boys” by Athol Fugard.
