Q When will you let us know who gets a free tank of gas for picking the price on Tuesday, Nov. 15? My car is getting thirsty.

– Bonnie Hill, San Jose

A We know the price now, $5.423. We received hundreds of contest entries, and it is taking me a few days to go through all of them. I’ll have the name of the winner soon.

Q My wife and I went to Santa Cruz recently. The weather was beautiful. There was one big problem. People parked and dashed across the street to walk by the ocean. Police need to prohibit pedestrians from dashing into traffic.

— James Rios

A A 12-month CHP campaign of enforcement and education to reduce the number of fatal and injury crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists began Oct. 1 in the Santa Cruz area. The campaign is being funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Despite off-highway beach access points, some coastal visitors park along the highway, which can lead to unsafe crossings and pedestrians walking along the highway shoulder. In 2019, CHP Santa Cruz received an average of four “pedestrian in the roadway” calls a day, totaling over 1,200 calls for the year.

Between federal fiscal years 2018 and 2020, 14 people lost their lives and 241 were injured in crashes involving pedestrians or bicyclists in the county.

As part of the campaign, CHP officers will conduct enhanced enforcement patrols focusing on pedestrian and bicycle safety. Regular public education and awareness events will reinforce how best to walk and bike safely.

Q Welcome back, Gary. I’ve missed you!

I have noticed that 80%-90% of Teslas and many other high-end cars do not have front license tags or brackets to hold them. I checked with the DMV, and it is the law in California. Any jurisdiction can cite any driver of a California-registered car without a front license plate. It seems we could pay for lots of street repairs, cleanups, police, homeless housing, etc., if we got busy giving tickets for this. Drivers should get one warning and 30 days to fix the problem or be cited and fined. Over and over. This is a safety issue and a financial issue. There should also be a law against selling a car in California without a front-end bracket. We could make a fortune from dealers, too. It could be retroactive if buyers want the problem fixed.

– Pat Bergman, San Jose

A This would make many people very happy. You are correct, this is the law in California.

Q Do you have any idea when the work at Almaden Expressway and Camden Avenue will be completed?

– Charlene Nemeth

A It is scheduled to be completed next summer.
