August 2, 1948 - December 27, 2024 Monterey After a long and varied life, Dana has completed his time on this earth. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia to Maude and Wilfred McGonigal.

From ayoung age, Dana had an interest in the ancillary medical field and held many jobs of that nature from Virginia to Florida to the San Francisco Bay Area. He found his true calling in 1988 when he became aFuneral Director.

For years, his empathic and soothing nature helped many families as they navigated the path of their own grief. Dana converted to Catholicism in 1992. He devoted his time and energy to St. Angela’s Church in Pacific Grove as parishioner, choir member and cantor. He cherished being an accepted member of that community and made many friends. As a religious man, Dana believed we are all connected spiritually. When dementia began to overtake him, he demonstrated this belief by greeting every soul he encountered as he walked for miles every day on the streets of Monterey. Two years ago, his walking days ceased when his dementia took a turn. He has been lovingly cared for by Joe Goncalves, his partner of 46 years. Although Dana couldn’t say much, he always said “Thank You.” We can never forget his mellifluous voice and bright light that brought love and understanding to all who met him.

Dana is survived by Joe Goncalves of Monterey and sister Joyce Hobbs and family of Virginia. He is dearly remembered by his friend Jane Usher of Santa Cruz and the entire Goncalves family. He touched our hearts in myriad ways and there he will reside forever. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to a charity of your choice.
