The California softball team had to sweat it out and had some nervous moments, but the Condors came away with a 7-4 victory over La Serna on Thursday to improve to 6-5 and 2-0 in the Del Rio League.
The Condors, it seems, have a habit of doing things the hard way, and that was evident again when needing to fend off the Lancers’ late-game rally.
Cal pitcher Pricilla Ramirez was working on a no-hitter with eight strikeouts and a 5-0 lead through five innings when the Lancers erupted for four runs in the sixth inning to make it interesting.
La Serna’s Isabela Sanchez belted a two-run home run and Emma Apodaca singled home Clarissa Segura to trim the Condors’ lead to 5-4, knocking Ramirez out of the game.
Junior Alexis Salas, a New Mexico commit and the Condors’ co-ace along with Sanchez, came in and bailed them out.
With runners on second and third and one out, Salas got a ground out and line out to end the inning, allowing the Condors to hold on to their one-run lead.
The Condors answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give them breathing room, and Salas closed out the seventh for the win.
The Condors’ Mia Martinez was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored, and Lauren Trivino was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Amaya Vasquez had two hits and an RBI, and Hailey Chavolla doubled home two runs.
It was the second straight league victory for the Condors, who beat El Rancho 7-3 on Tuesday. La Serna dropped to 4-3 and 1-2.
Early on, it was all Condors.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Chavolla doubled in Emily Olguin in the second inning to make it 3-0. After adding a run in the fourth, Acosta singled home Mia Martinez to give them a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning.
Bishop Amat 10, St. Paul 6: The Lancers raced to a 7-0 lead and led 10-1 when the Swordsmen scored four runs in the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late.
Bishop Amat’s Samantha Garcia led the Lancers’ 14-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Garcia also pitched a complete game. Although six runs came across, she only allowed two earned runs.
Aiyana Perez had two hits and an RBI and Julyssa Jimenez singled in two runs for the Lancers. Avery Hipolito, Bryanna Mendoza and Bianca Rojo all had doubles for the Lancers, who improved to 8-9 and 3-1 in the Del Rey League.
Mya Besera hit a three-run home run for the Swordsmen.
El Rancho 11, Arroyo 0: Dons pitcher Jaelynn Barragan threw a five-inning complete game shutout, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts in their non-league victory to improve to 7-4-1.
Malaya Vargas had a big game at the plate, belting a three-run home run and finishing with three hits and five RBIs.
Bonita 10, Diamond Bar 0: Koa Puppe belted two home runs and finished with five RBIs for the Bearcats. As good as their offense was, their pitching was just as good.
Bonita pitchers Serenity Reyes and Sara Yeates combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter. Reyes started and pitched three innings, finishing with eight strikeouts. Yeats pitched the final two innings with two strikeouts.
