LOS ANGELES — Bishop Amat’s boys soccer team heard too many times how hard it is to beat a good team three times in the same season. But that’s what the Lancers had to do if they wanted to reach the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals.
The teams’ third meeting of the season Wednesday turned out the same as the first two, as the visiting Lancers overcame a deficit to beat Cathedral 2-1 with a golden goal in overtime. The victory sends Bishop Amat to the semifinals for the first time.
Bishop Amat defender Michael Luna tied the score 1-1 in the 43rd minute on Maximus Ugalde’s free kick. The rebound dropped in front of Luna, who scissor-kicked it home.
The score stayed tied and the contest went to overtime. The Lancers’ Matthew Ibarra drew a questionable penalty kick: Did he dive or was he tripped up?
All that matters now is that the penalty was called, setting the stage for Junior Moreno, who confidently finished the PK to give the Lancers the victory.
Bishop Amat (26-2-1) will host El Segundo (12-5-1) in the semifinals Saturday at 5 p.m. The win Wednesday also qualified the Lancers for the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs.
“A lot of credit to Cathedral, that’s not the way any team wants to end their season,” Bishop Amat coach Steve Jimenez said. “But the ref saw something (on the PK), and he made the call. A lot of credit to the ref, a lot of times refs don’t make those calls because of the atmosphere of the game.”
Jimenez also thought the result was deserving, because Amat had far more chances.
“A lot of credit to our boys,” Jimenez said of their comeback. “They always say ‘Amat grit’ around here, and I didn’t know what grit was until I got to Amat. And these guys worked their butts off and they deserved it.”
Moreno said he didn’t feel nervous on the penalty.
“I don’t miss (penalties),” Moreno said with a smile. “I go the same way every single time. It means a lot. We want to win everything and we had to beat them three times. We’re blessed and on to the next round.”
For Luna, who has been assisting goals all season with his long throws, it felt good to hammer one home in such a big moment.
“I went in hoping to get an opportunity and just hit it in and thankfully I did and thank God for that,” Luna said.
