A 24-year-old man died Saturday night during a fire at his Camelot Estates home in Portage.

The Lake County coroner’s office identified the victim as Inikko Irizarry. He died of smoke inhalation. Portage firefighters found him unresponsive and attempted to revive him before transporting him to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.

The cause has yet to be determined, said Assistant Chief Jeremy Himan of the Portage Fire Department. The department’s fire investigation team and the state fire marshal’s office are investigating the fire.

Firefighters were dispatched about 6:30 p.m. Saturday and arrived to find “heavy fire” on the manufactured home’s north end. Flames and heavy smoke were showing when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters found Irizarry in a bedroom on the south side of the home, Himan said.

This isn’t the only recent fatal fire in Portage. “Unfortunately, we’ve had a couple in the last year,” Himan said.
