A Rochester Hills doctor accused of secretly recording several children and an adult in the changing rooms of a local swim school has been ordered to stand trial.
Several witnesses testified during a preliminary exam Friday at Rochester Hills’ 52-3 District Court in the case against Oumair Aejaz before he was bound over on multiple counts. They include ne count of child sexually abusive activity, seven counts of computer-use to commit a crime and six counts of capturing/distributing image of unclothed person.
Aejaz, an internal medicine doctor, is accused of placing hidden cameras in changing rooms and filming people while they were nude at the Goldfish Swim School in Rochester Hills, prosecutors say. He faced multiple counts of using a computer to commit crimes, distributing or capturing images of an unclothed person and child sexually abusive behavior.
One set of accusations is related to a mother with her 2-year-old and 4-year-old children in a changing room at the swim school.
Aejaz allegedly filmed the mom, the two children and another adult woman from a nearby area, prosecutors say. There is also an alleged fifth victim who has not been identified. But the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has called the case against Aejaz “the tip of the iceberg,” believing there could be hundreds of other victims.
Assistant Prosecutor Allison Krueger first called Aejaz’ wife during Friday’s hearing, who testified that she found cameras and memory cards hidden around the family’s home starting in 2022, including in her closet and a bathroom used by her and her children.
Shazia Tabassum testified she first found the cameras and cards after she discovered a QR code that led to an app called LookCam.
Speaking through a translator, she repeatedly said she was “shocked” by her discoveries. She testified she confronted him in February 2023 when she pretended to take a shower, and then saw him running out of the adjacent room when she opened the door.
Videos she found on memory cards and a hard drive included footage from what she believed was the Goldfish Swim School, videos of patients and videos of him having “sexual relations” with other people, including a coworker, she said. Tabassum thought she recognized the swim school because her children also took lessons there.
She choked up as she described her shock finding the contents of the hard drive, saying she didn’t recognize the person she had been married to for years.
“I was looking at a different person who was not human,” Tabassum said.
Aejaz watched her testimony stoically. He wore orange jail scrubs and black-framed glasses, his hands cuffed to a chain around his waist.
Tabassum looked distressed again when she spoke about finding footage of her and Aejaz having sex, taken from a camera hidden in their closet.
Tabassum said her discovery of the sexually explicit content prompted her to file for divorce in June 2024, though at the time she continued living with him.
She first reported what she’d found to Rochester Hills police in August 2024, and she took copies she’d made of memory cards and hard drives.
Tabassum testified that she didn’t go to the police sooner because she felt like she didn’t have concrete proof Aejaz was the one who had placed the hidden cameras. Tabassum also said she was fearful of confronting him.
“Any sort of confrontation with him is a very difficult task,” Tabassum said. “In the past, his reaction is really very bad when it comes to confrontation.”
Aejaz’ defense attorney, Mariell Lehman, asked few questions of Tabassum except to confirm timelines she mentioned in her testimony.
Detective Sgt. Jon Elges, a digital forensic investigator in Oakland County, testified that he found an estimated 100,000 video clips on a hard drive allegedly belonging to Aejaz.
Sgt. Chad Allan executed a search warrant for Aejaz’ home, and also led outreach to search for additional potential victims. He said he was able to link Aejaz to the video clips because the doctor occasionally captured himself on video by mistake, and added Aejaz has distinctive-looking hands with freckles that he identified in some videos.
In a separate case, the Oakland County prosecutor’s office filed more felony charges against Aejaz for allegedly sexually assaulting and recording a 6-year-old girl in 2023 and 2024.
