A Farmington Hills man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly threatened a person with a blade and barricaded himself in his home for five hours, officials said.

They also said he could be charged as soon as Friday in connection with the incident.

Farmington Hills police Chief Jeff King said officers received a 911 call at about 7 a.m. Thursday about an alleged assault that happened in the 31000 block of West Nine Mile Road near Grand River Avenue.

“We received a 911 call about a confrontation that escalated into a felonious assault with an edged weapon, a knife or some kind of bladed weapon,” he said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the confrontation began between the suspect and another person over a traffic complaint, the chief said.

One of the suspect’s neighbors had summoned a ride-share driver to the area and the driver used a private driveway where the suspect lives to cut through the area, police said.

Investigators believe the act sparked a confrontation during which the suspect pulled out a weapon. The neighbor and the driver both fled, they said. The suspect returned to his residence, officials said.

Police officers arrived, spoke to witnesses, and identified the suspect’s residence, King said.

He said when they went to the man’s home to speak to him, “the suspect exited his residence, was armed, acted aggressively and refused to talk to the officers” before going back inside.

Police set up a perimeter around the suspect’s home, the police chief said. They then worked to identify the suspect and determine whether he was alone in the residence. King said they also notified residents about the situation.

After officials verified he was the sole person in his home and attempts to communicate with the man failed, the special tactical team for the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office was summoned to the scene, police said. “Five hours later, after a lot of tactical operations, attempts to communicate, and investigative work, we were able to create a situation where this subject eventually complied with our requests to surrender and did so peacefully.”

King said no injuries to the suspect, police officers or residents in the area were reported.

The suspect was taken into custody and is awaiting charges, the police chief said.

He also said the investigation is ongoing and detectives hope to present their findings to the Oakland Count Prosecutor’s Office later Friday.
