Pope Francis, the first pontiff from Latin America, died Monday at age 88 after a stroke that led to heart failure.

Francis had celebrated Easter the previous day, blessing thousands in an appearance at St. Peter’s Square. He had been hospitalized earlier this year with double pneumonia.

Born in Argentina as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Francis was pope for 12 years following the resignation of Pope Benedict in 2013.
