Vinícius Júnior scored a goal and assisted on another in Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Salzburg on Thursday night that secured the Spanish powerhouse first place in the Club World Cup’s Group H and a spot in the round of 16.
Vinícius gave the 64,811 soaking wet fans at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia something to cheer for by scoring on a left-footed shot right outside the penalty box in the 40th minute. Jude Bellingham left Vinícius in position to score with a breakaway pass that took advantage of the wet field conditions caused by the rain.
Eight minutes later, a deflected pass by Mamady Diambou left Vinícius one-on-one against Joane Gadou inside Salzburg’s penalty box. Having no angle to shoot, Vinícius delivered a backheel pass to Federico Valverde that left the Uruguayan wide open to score from 10 yards out.
Antonio Rüdiger suffered an apparent hamstring injury in the 60th minute after completing a long sprint down the right wing. He continued playing, but was subbed out six minutes later. His availability will be one to watch for Real Madrid’s upcoming game as they are thin at the center back position due to multiple injuries and a suspension to Raúl Asencio.
Gonzalo García put the game to bed with a goal in the 84th minute.
Manchester City 5, Juventis 2: Manchester City won Group G with a dominant performance at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
Man City went ahead 2-1 on an own goal in the 26th minute when defender Pierre Kalulu, attempting to intercept a pass at close range, sent the ball into the net.
The rout was on from there. Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Savinho scored in the second half to make it 5-1.
Jeremy Doku opened the scoring for Man City in the ninth minute, and Teun Koopmeiners equalized two minutes later. Dusan Vlahovic scored in the 84th minute for the Italian club, which finished second in the group.
Al Hilal 2, Pachuca 0: Salem Aldawsari scored in the 22nd minute and Al Hilal won in Nashville to clinch a berth in the round of 16.
Marcus Leonardo also scored for Al Hilal, the only team outside Europe and the Americas to advance out of group play.
Al Hilal will next face English club Manchester City on Monday in Orlando, Florida.
Aldawsari, attacking from the left, scored with the ball bouncing off his right foot and soaring over the head of Pachuca goalie Sebastian Jurado to the right side of the goal.
The game drew 14,147 to Geodis Park, which has a capacity of 30,000.
Al Ain 2, Dydad 1: Kaku scored early in the second half to lift Al Ain to the victory over Wydad in the final match of the Club World Cup for both clubs.
Both teams were already eliminated from contention for the tournament’s knockout round. They went into the final group match without a win in Group G, which was dominated by Juventus and Manchester City.
Wydad coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem was at the game on crutches following a traffic accident with a team physician earlier in the week. No one involved in the accident was seriously injured, but the Moroccan coach was unable to attend the team’s news conference the day before the match.
Wydad scored in the fourth minute. Cassius Mailula found himself unchallenged at the end of a cross by Mohamed Moufid and beat goalkeeper Rui Patrício at the near post. Mailula is currently on loan to Wydad from Toronto FC in Major League Soccer.
Kodjo Laba converted a penalty just before halftime to pull Al Ain even, and Al Ain took the lead in the 50th minute when Paraguayan international Kaku finished into the upper right corner. Wydad centerback Jamal Harkass was injured in the run-up to the goal and had to be taken off on a stretcher.
