Struggling US loses 2-1 to Canada in 3rd-place match

INGLEWOOD, Calif.>> Jonathan David scored the tiebreaking goal early in the second half, and Canada added to the U.S. men’s national team’s woes under coach Mauricio Pochettino with a 2-1 victory Sunday night in the third-place match of the CONCACAF Nations League tournament.

Tani Oluwaseyi scored in the first half for Canada, and Patrick Agyemang responded in the 35th minute for the U.S. before David slotted home the winner in the 59th minute. The Americans couldn’t answer, and they fell to a dismal 5-3 during Pochettino’s six months in charge of their preparations for next year’s home World Cup.

Mexico faced Panama for the championship in a late game Sunday.

Houlihan earns silver in return after 4-year ban

American runner Shelby Houlihan returned to the big stage after a much-debated four-year doping ban and won a silver medal in the 3,000 meters at the world indoor championships.

The U.S. record holder at 1,500 meters and former record holder in the 5,000 sat out the Paris Olympics because she tested positive after eating a burrito she claimed was tainted with a performance-enhancing drug. The 32-year-old runner said she was flooded with a range of emotions after her second-place finish Saturday.

Feurstein wins last super-G of season

SUN VALLEY, Idaho>> Lukas Feurstein led a 1-2 Austrian finish in the final super-G race of the season on Sunday at the World Cup finals.

Feurstein’s first World Cup victory came on the new and steep Sun Valley course. The 23-year-old finished in 1 minute, 10.96 seconds to hold off teammate Raphael Haaser by 0.19 seconds. Franjo von Allmen of Switzerland finished third.

Swiss racer Marco Odermatt made sure there was no drama by locking up the season-long discipline title ahead of the World Cup finals.

Texas fires coach Terry

AUSTIN, Texas>> The University of Texas fired basketball coach Rodney Terry on Sunday after a disappointing first season in the Southeastern Conference and another quick exit from the NCAA Tournament.

The move comes two years after Terry led Texas to the Elite Eight in the 2022-2023 season when, as an assistant coach, he took over the program at midseason after then-coach Chris Beard was fired.

14-year-old son of former Yankees OF Gardner dies

NEW YORK>> The youngest son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, has died after falling ill during a family vacation. Miller Gardner was 14.

Miller Gardner died in his sleep Friday morning, according to a statement from the couple that was released by the Yankees on Sunday. The Gardners said they “have so many questions and so few answers at this point.”

Brett Gardner, 41, was drafted by the Yankees in 2005 and spent his entire big league career, 14 seasons, with the organization.

Red Sox release Ottavino

FORT MYERS, Fla.>> Right-handed reliever Adam Ottavino has been released by the Boston Red Sox. Ottavino, 39, pitched for the New York Mets the past three seasons, making a career-high 12 saves in 2023 to go with a 3.21 ERA.
