OAKLAND >> In a season in which the bottom of the Angels’ roster has so often failed to pick up the slack when the top players have been slumping or injured, games like the Angels’ 5-4, 12-inning victory over the Oakland A’s on Wednesday have been rare.
The pitching stars were Touki Toussaint and Jaime Barria, and the big hits came from Luis Rengifo and Magneuris Sierra. Barria was the only one of those four on the Opening Day roster. Their contributions led the Angels to finish off their first sweep of a series since April, and their first three-game winning streak of any kind since June.
Toussaint pitched five scoreless innings. Rengifo hit a three-run homer. Sierra drove in runs in the 10th and 12th innings. Barria pitched all three extra innings, stranding Oakland’s automatic runner twice.
Barria now has a 2.52 ERA this season, having started and finished games in the last week. He earned the right to try both roles because he had been so good in mop-up duty for most of the season.
“Nothing fazes him,” manager Phil Nevin said. “He goes out and throws strikes and he’s gonna make his pitches. He’s gonna throw the same. He doesn’t tinker. He doesn’t waver. Obviously, no situation is too big for him. He throws
