A potential star at cornerback and two other possible contributors are no longer with the Colorado Buffaloes.
On Friday, cornerback Colton Hood, running back Brandon Hood and linebacker Jaylen Wester put their names into the NCAA transfer portal. Walk-on linebacker Trenton Hood also put his name in the portal on the last day it was open for the spring window.
Colton Hood, a redshirt sophomore, had been projected as a starting corner for the Buffaloes this year, potentially taking the spot vacated by Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday.
Last season, Hood played in all 13 games with one start. He played 332 snaps and posted 24 tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups. This spring, he missed all 15 practices with an injury. Hood transferred to CU last year after redshirting at Auburn in 2023.
His younger brother, Brandon, signed with CU out of high school last year. Brandon Hood did not appear in any games with the Buffs, taking a redshirt year. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound redshirt freshman was expected to compete for carries in the backfield this year.
Colton Hood explained the decision by him and his brother Brandon with a post on X on Saturday.
“My brother and I dreamed of playing college football together since we were nine years old,” he wrote. “I came to Boulder to help the team and play with my brother! In college athletics, as coaching changes take place, coaches are free to bring in their own personnel.
“On April 25, we learned the school was moving in a different direction and we humbly respected that decision by entering the portal. Thank you to everyone for the love and support over the past year. Please pray for me as I pursue purpose because I’ve never chased paychecks!”
Wester, the younger brother of now-former CU star receiver LaJohntay Wester, also goes into the portal after one season with the Buffs. He spent the spring competing for a starting role at inside linebacker.
A senior who began his career with two seasons at Florida Atlantic, Wester played in 11 games in 2024, mostly on special teams. In 85 snaps on defense, Wester recorded 15 tackles, one pass breakup and a forced fumble.
Trenton Hood is a cousin of Colton and Brandon. Trenton joined CU as a walk-on out of high school last year and did not appear in any games.
Colton and Brandon Hood both went to Eagles Landing (Ga.) Christian Academy with offensive lineman Zack Owens, who entered the portal Wednesday. Cornerback RJ Johnson also played at Eagles Landing, but did not put his name in the portal.
