GREELEY

30-person brawl breaks out Sunday morning just outside Greeley Stampede

A 30-person brawl erupted just after midnight Sunday just east of the Greeley Stampede grounds, police said.

No deaths or severe injuries were reported in the fight, which Greeley Police Cmdr. Mike Heck called the most severe he’s seen in his near-decade overseeing police operations at the Stampede.

The Stampede was still open when the fight broke out, but Heck said nobody was in the area who wasn’t involved in the brawl.

Ten Greeley officers on patrol at the Stampede arrived just after the fight started, and police say most of the crowd dispersed when the initial officers arrived.

Several people involved were tracked gang members, many of whom police had run-ins with earlier in the night, according to arrest records.

Three arrests were made immediately following the event, but no charges have yet been officially filed against any of the suspects, court records show.

NATIONAL PARK

Old Fall River Road set to open Friday

Crews at Rocky Mountain National Park are preparing Old Fall River Road to open for the season to vehicles on Friday morning, July 4.

The road will be closed to all uses, including pedestrians, people walking dogs on leash, and cyclists, between 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and will be closed for dust abatement on Wednesday and Thursday, according to a news release.

The unpaved road starts next to Endovalley Picnic Area and follows the steep slope of Mount Chapin’s south face, ending at the top of Fall River Pass, where it merges with Trail Ridge Road at Alpine Visitor Center.

Due to the narrow and winding nature of the road, the scenic 9.4-mile route is one-way uphill only, and vehicles over 25 feet and vehicles pulling trailers are prohibited from traveling on the road.

Timed entry reservations are required to enter the park between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To learn more visit go.nps.gov/romo/timedentry.
