The story on former House Speaker Melissa Hortman’s landmark housing discrimination case that ran on June 19 did not include the final damages awarded to Stormy Harmon after the initial sum of $490,000 was reduced on appeal. The reduced award was about $80,000. The trial jury originally awarded Harmon $490,000 after finding that Reynold Mattson discriminated against Harmon on the basis of her race, gender, disability and status as a public assistance recipient, causing her emotional distress. The Mattsons appealed. The appellate court upheld only the racial discrimination claim, reversing the jury’s findings on Harmon’s claims of gender, disability and public assistance discrimination, as well as her claim of emotional distress. The appellate court reduced the jury award to $79,681, according to an unpublished opinion provided by the Minnesota Judicial Branch.
