Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was arrested Saturday after he was apparently stabbed in an overnight altercation in downtown Indianapolis.
Sanchez, who was in Indianapolis to call today’s Raiders-Colts game, was charged with battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication — all misdemeanors.
Indianapolis police said Sanchez was in a hospital and had not been booked into a detention center. He was in stable condition, according to Fox Sports.
Police said the Marion County prosecutor’s office would make the final charging decision. That office didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry from The Associated Press.
Indianapolis police said earlier in the day that they were investigating a confrontation that occurred around 12:30 a.m. Saturday between two men, one of whom was hospitalized with stab wounds. The other man received treatment for lacerations, police said.
Detectives had reviewed video footage of the confrontation, which police said occurred in the popular downtown nightlife Wholesale District next to the Indiana statehouse.
Police said neither man was a local resident and called it an “isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence.”
Few other details were available.
“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy,” Fox Sports said.
Sanchez, 38, had a 10-year NFL career before retiring in 2019.
The New Orleans Saints (0-4) have moved versatile quarterback Taysom Hill and former Oakland Raiders tight end Foster Moreau from the club’s physically unable to perform list with knee injuries to the active roster in advance of today’s home game against the New York Giants (1-3).
The New York Jets waived wide receiver Isaiah Williams after he made two critical mistakes on special teams in a loss earlier this week at Miami. Williams fumbled the kickoff to open the second half against the Dolphins, leading to a touchdown drive in Miami’s 27-21 win.
WNBA
The Phoenix Mercury led Game 1 of the WNBA Finals for more than two-thirds of the game, but couldn’t finish what they started in their 89-86 loss to the Las Vegas Aces.
The Mercury were ahead for more than 27 minutes Friday and their biggest lead was nine points after Monique Akoa Makani hit three consecutive free throws to give them a 66-57 advantage with 3:36 left in the third quarter.
Phoenix’s last lead was 82-80 with a little less than 5 minutes left.
So what went wrong?
“They made a couple plays down the stretch we didn’t,” Phoenix coach Nate Tibbets said. “That’s why this is going to be a great series, right?”
It could be, if the Mercury don’t make the same mistakes today in Game 2 under the pressure of a raucous arena that had a sellout crowd of 10,266 reach peak decibels on Friday.
Phoenix committed 12 turnovers, to Las Vegas’ five, and the Aces capitalized with 20 points off the Mercury’s miscues.
Kahleah Copper finished with 21 points, but 19 of those came in the first half. The Mercury went from shooting 52.9% (18 of 34) in the first half to 40.6% in the second half (13 of 32) after the Aces used a zone defense.

NHL
The Minnesota Wild announced a five-year, $34 million contract extension for goalie Filip Gustavsson.
Gustavsson’s extension begins in the 2026-27 season and goes through 2030-31. It’s the team’s latest move after signing star Kirill Kaprizov to the richest deal in NHL history earlier this week.
The 27-year-old from Sweden started all 58 games he appeared in for Minnesota last season, posting a 31-19-6 record with five shutouts and a 2.56 goals-against average.
Minnesota acquired Gustavsson in a trade with the Ottawa Senators in 2022.
