Monte Vista Christian School senior Kylie Brunelli took first place out of 168 runners in the Medium Blue race during the 45th annual Asics Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno on Friday.

Brunelli completed the 5,000-meter course in 18:56.4.

“Kylie’s performance was remarkable,” Mustangs coach Erik Beckmen said. “She pushed the race and made the runners chase her. Kylie’s season is a dream season for any athlete. She has worked very hard since the last cross country season, and the hard work has payed off with the results she is having.”

She bettered her personal record from the CIF State Championship last season by 1:02.

Oaks Christian junior Delaney Napierala took second in 19:09.4.

Boys cross country

Asics Clovis Invitational >> MVC placed three runners in the top 20 and took first out of 13 teams in the Small Yellow race during the 45th annual Asics Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno on Friday.

MVC junior Gavin Beckmen (17:24.4) took 15th, junior Conor Gilliam (17:31.1) took 16th, and senior Bradley Orlando (17:33.8) took 18th.

“The boys ran a tough race,” Mustangs coach Erik Beckman said. “Gavin Beckmen led the team, but each runner contributed to our win. The temperatures were around 85 degrees and the boys battled to the very end.”

Junior Elisha Kieft (18:49.5; 33rd) and senior Justin McCullick (18:53.4; 35th) also scored for the Mustangs (85), who edged Yosemite (86) by one point for the title. Bay School of San Francisco (98) took third.

Fresno Christian sophomore Blake Bay (16:00.7) took first out of 97 runners in the 13-team race.

Boys water polo

At Santa Cruz 13, St. Ignatius 11 >> The Cardinals added to their list of their stellar performances against section competition and posted another impressive nonleague win Friday.

Santa Cruz (14-2) has just one loss to a CCS opponent.

Senior Pa’kalani Vaka-Saxton had five goals, one assist and three steals for the Cardinals, and Junior Hayden Johnson had four goals and two steals. Senior Matthias Cruz had two goals and one assist. Xavier Hunter and Nikolaus Kay also scored.

Sophomore goalie Laird Bowser had seven blocks and one steal.

At Harbor 7, Carlmont 6 >> Junior Kai Hendrikson scored five goals and the Pirates won their opener at the Harbor Invitational on Friday.

Junior Kasper Mills and senior Logan Manildi also scored for the Pirates, who beat Aptos in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play a day earlier.

Milles scored four goals in an 11-9 win over Aptos. Elias Keen Server, Jamison Venus and Henrikson each scored twice against the Mariners, and Ty Houghton added a goal.

Girls volleyball

Harbor Tournament >> The Pirates beat Sobrato 20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23 and Sage Hill of Newport Beach 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 on Friday to open the Harbor Tournament and earn a match against Folsom in Saturday’s semifinals.

Senior outside hitter Isla Johnson had 13 kills and seven aces in the win over Sobrato. Senior outside hitter Maren O’Farrell had 12 kills and two aces, senior middle blocker Sabine Kemos made 9 kills, and sophomore middle blocker Cecile Novembre had nine kills and four blocks.

Johnson had 14 kills and five aces in the sweep of Sage Hill. O’Farrell had eight kills and an ace. Senior setters Callahan Stone and Sandy Enriquez each made 13 assists.

Men’s soccer

Cabrillo 1, De Anza 1 >> Yoan Ponio scored on a pass from Edson Gonzales in the 35th minute, and the Seahawks won their conference crossover match Friday.

Goalies Carlos Bajaras and Angel Edgar each played a half for Cabrillo and combined for six saves.

Omar Figueroa made seven saves for the Mountain Lions (6-3-2, 2-1-1).

Hernan Alvarez received his second yellow card in the 79th minute and was ejected.

Cabrillo (5-3-2, 3-1-0) hosts Chabot (5-4-2, 1-2-1) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Women’s soccer

Cabrillo 1, Foothill 0 >> The Seahawks scored in the first half and made it hold up in their conference crossover match Friday.

Cabrillo (2-8-1, 0-1-0) plays at Las Positas (4-6-2, 0-2-1) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
