Charges are pending against a man who is in police custody after two people were killed and three others hospitalized in a shooting that erupted early Sunday morning outside a bar in Hammond’s Robertsdale neighborhood.

Around 4 a.m., police responded to reports of gunfire outside of Portside Pub, located at 1516 Indianapolis Boulevard, according to a news release from the Hammond Police Department. When officers arrived, they found five people had been shot; two were pronounced dead at the scene, while three were sent to local hospitals. Of those hospitalized, two are in serious condition while one is in stable condition, the release stated.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Lorraine Reyna, 59, and Paul Olivares, 25, both of Whiting.

Four of the people who were shot — including a bartender and three patrons — were trying to help a woman involved in a domestic dispute, police said in a release, but their efforts to de-escalate the situation were met with gunfire.

A man of interest was questioned Monday, and police were supposed to present charges to the Lake County Prosecutor’s office shortly after, Hammond Police spokesman Capt. Steve Kellogg told the Post-Tribune. Police said the man’s name will be released once he is formally charged.
