GARDEN TIP
Protecting your garden from rabbits
Recently, I attended a gardening class in North Carolina. The instructor gave us a handout with a list of 20 “rabbit-resistant plants.” I recognized a few of them by their scientific names.
However, I cannot recommend any of them. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources has information about rabbits as pests on its website. It does not list any plants as “rabbit resistant.”
The best solution to a rabbit problem is a fence. A 48-inch-tall wire fence with mesh no greater than 1 inch will stop even young rabbits. The bottom of the fence should be buried at least 6 inches into the ground.
