Two men are dead after crashes Thursday on the Kennedy Expressway and the Tri-State Tollway, according to Illinois State Police.
The first crash occurred about 5:20 a.m. southbound on the Tri-State (Interstate 294) near 115th Street in Alsip, police said. A yellow International tollway maintenance truck was traveling on the right shoulder with its emergency lights on when a 2013 gray Ford Escape crashed into the rearof the truck.
The impact from the crash caused the Ford Escape to fully engulf in flames, police said. The driver, a 36-year-old Chicago man, was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified.
The truck driver, a 46-year-old Downers Grove man, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
All the southbound lanes except for left lane were closed for investigation until just about 9:15 a.m., police said.
The second crash happened about 11:20 p.m. northbound on the Kennedy at Addison Street on the Northwest Side, police said. The driver of a 2005 black Yamaha motorcycle lost control and hit another vehicle.
Troopers learned that the other vehicle did not stop and drove away from the scene.
The motorcyclist, a 27-year-old Schaumburg man, was ejected and landed in the left two lanes of the expressway, police said. The motorcycle landed in a ditch to the right side of the expressway.
The motorcyclist was identified as Kevin Nitsch, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at 12:16 a.m.
The left three northbound lanes were shut down for investigation until about 12:30 a.m., police said. Then all the northbound lanes and the Addison ramp were shut down for investigation with traffic diverted off the interstate to Addison until 2:30 a.m.
