An incredibly tough schedule out of the gate helped put the Colorado lacrosse team in a tough spot after the first month of the season.

But the Buffaloes have had a few games to regroup at home. And just maybe CU is turning a corner.

After starting the season 1-4, all against ranked foes, the Buffs recorded their third victory in a row Thursday, edging No. 18 Stony Brook 7-6 in a defensive battle at Prentup Field. CU improved to 2-4 against ranked foes and 4-4 overall going into a stretch of three consecutive road games.

The match remained scoreless for nearly 10 minutes before Stony Brook (5-3) finally scored the game’s first goal. From there, though, CU scored three in a row in a span of seven minutes, with a Maddie Shoup goal giving the Buffs a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter.

The teams traded goals the remainder of the first half, giving CU a 5-3 lead at the break, and Molly Reed extended the Buffs’ advantage to three goals with a tally early in the third quarter.

The Seawolves attempted to rally, scoring three of the next four goals to twice cut CU’s lead to a goal. But the Buffs held Stony Brook scoreless over the final 6:21 to secure the win.

CU outshot Stony Brook 26-22, but the shots on goal were even at 14-14. Buffs freshman goalie Elena Oh finished with eight saves.

The Buffs begin their run of three consecutive road games on Sunday against Dartmouth in a match that will be played in Houston. CU doesn’t return home until a Big 12 matchup against Florida on April 12.
