Senior goalkeeper Giovanny Martinez recognizes the importance of being a leader in the net for Bremen.

“Communication is key,” he said. “I’m always yelling to my ‘D,’ telling them where to go and trying to do my part. It’s my last year and I want to step it up and help us all go far.”

Martinez came up with four big saves Tuesday to help the host Braves shut out Argo for the second time in eight days with a 1-0 win in a South Suburban crossover.

Jorge Gomez scored the lone goal for the Braves (9-2-1, 2-0-1). He did the same thing on Sept. 4 in the Windy City Ram Classic championship win over the Argonauts (4-3-1, 0-2-1).

Argo spent most of the second half on the attack, searching for the equalizing goal, but Martinez was up for the challenge.

His biggest highlight came with just over 28 minutes to go as Argo’s Arturo Cabrera set up Mateusz Bartyczak for a good look in front of the net that was denied by Martinez’s kick save.

“I was just making sure I was guarding the post and I waited for the shot and I was able to knock it away,” Martinez said.

Bremen coach Tom Piotrowski was left shaking his head in disbelief.

“I was like, ‘How did he do that?’ ” Piotrowski said. “Giovanny had a couple huge saves and those are total game changers.”

Martinez also stretched high to pull down a shot from Michael Budz with 19 minutes to go.

Gomez, meanwhile, experienced a bit of déjà vu when he headed in Osmar Marquina-Reyes’ corner kick in the 24th minute.

Gomez has three goals this season, with two being game-winners against the Argonauts.

“They’re almost the only team I score against,” Gomez said. “It’s crazy. We knew Argo was going to come out strong against us this time and we had to be ready for it.”

The Braves bounced back from a rough 3-0 loss Saturday to Thornton co-op.

“I was angry after that game,” Gomez said. “We haven’t been training as hard as we need to. We knew we had to come out and play harder this game.”

Saul Munoz had two saves for the Argonauts, who are 0-3-1 over their last four games after starting 4-0.

“I think the guys got a little too excited when we started 4-0 against really good teams and they lost their focus,” Argo coach John Gaytan said. “We outplayed (Bremen) in this game, but we couldn’t finish. You have to score to win.”
