An off-duty southwest suburban police sergeant working as a security guard was shot in the leg after he intervened in an argument Monday afternoon, Oak Lawn police said.

Police said the shooting took place at about noon Monday and they arrested 35-year-old Khambrel Lee, of Lauderhill, Florida, an employee of the business where it occurred.

Lee got into an argument with some of the other workers at the business, located on the 10800 block of South Central Avenue, took a gun out and then shot at the nearby off-duty sergeant, police said in a statement.

A second security officer shot at least once at Lee, according to police.

Lee shot five rounds at the off-duty sergeant before his gun jammed, and the off-duty sergeant and the second officer restrained him, police said.

The sergeant was being treated at a nearby hospital for his leg wound while the second officer refused medical help, police said.

Lee was charged Tuesday with attempted first-degree murder, police said.

Police said Lee’s gun recovered at the scene is a .45 caliber Springfield Armory XD45 that was legally purchased by him in Florida.

The gun will be sent to the ATF for ballistics and an inquiry to determine if the gun has been used in any other incidents or crimes, they said.

Lee also was found in possession of two additional magazines loaded with 13 rounds each at the time of his arrest, police said.
