Bay FC announced Tuesday it has acquired prospect forward Onyeka Gamero for an undisclosed transfer fee from Spanish club FC Barcelona, pending receipt of her international transfer clearance.

The 19-year-old Gamero, a native of Cerritos, is signed through the 2028 NWSL season.

“I’m beyond excited to sign with Bay FC,” Gamero said in a statement released by the team.

As a 17-year-old, Gamero committed to Stanford but signed with FC Barcelona B in 2023. Starting in June of that year, she began her professional career with the club and scored two goals and had an assist in nine matches before sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament that fall.

Gamero has reported to Bay FC and is following return-to-play protocol as the team assesses the next steps in her recovery, a team spokesperson said.

Bay FC hosts two Summer Series Friendlies at PayPal Park this month, facing Angel City FC on July 19 and Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds on July 27.

Earthquakes captain Cristian Espinoza was added to the Major League Soccer All-Star roster on Tuesday, giving him his second career berth in the midseason festivities.

Espinoza is second in MLS in assists with 11 and has scored four goals for the Quakes, who have undergone a turnaround in manager Bruce Arena’s first year. The Quakes are eighth in the Western Conference with 28 points (7-8-7), in position for a playoff spot 22 games into the season.

Espinoza, who has played 20 regular-season games, has been named to the league’s Team of the Matchday four times this season.

The original roster -- which includes Miami’s Lionel Messi and Sunnyvale native Diego Luna of Real Salt Lake -- featured 12 players added by fan voting, 12 picked by Estévez and two by commissioner Don Garber.

Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain averaged 1.3 million viewers on TBS and the 24 matches televised in the U.S. with English commentary averaged 458,000, TNT Sports said Tuesday. Spanish-language coverage of the final in the U.S. on Univision and TUDN averaged 1.43 million viewers and TelevisaUnivision’s 18 games averaged 597,000. Turner said 15 matches on nights and weekends averaged 535,000 viewers.

Tennis

Jannik Sinner’s victory over Carlos Alcaraz was the most-viewed Wimbledon men’s final since Novak Djokovic edged Roger Federer in a five-set thriller in 2019.

ESPN said Sunday’s match averaged 2.9 million viewers, a 31% increase over last year’s final and its best performance since about 3.8 million watched Djokovic win a fifth-set tiebreaker. The network also said Tuesday that ratings were up for the both the men’s and women’s semifinals

British tennis player Tara Moore was banned for four years Tuesday after a court agreed with the International Tennis Integrity Agency that she should be suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs.

Moore tested positive for anabolic steroids boldenone and nandrolone in April 2022, but she was cleared in December 2023 after an independent tribunal determined that the result was caused by eating contaminated meat while she was competing in Colombia.

The ITIA appealed that ruling, focusing on the portion of the findings related to nandrolone, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in the ITIA’s favor, saying Moore couldn’t prove the sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat.

Olympics

The Milan-Cortina Olympics are the first games with two host cities in the name. So the medals for the upcoming Winter Games represent “two halves coming together.”

Organizers unveiled the medals in Venice on Tuesday. They are described as “a graphic abstraction capturing the union of two halves in perpetual motion” and “two unique halves coming together to create a bold, unified statement.”

They feature the Olympic rings on one side and the games’ logos on the other with specific events engraved on each medal. The Olympics are scheduled for Feb. 6-22, followed by the Paralympics March 6-15.

Gymnastics

Belgian gymnast Nina Derwael, a former Olympic champion on the uneven bars, is retiring from the sport, her national federation said on Tuesday. Derwael, 25, won the gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and has decided to retire after capturing two more titles at the European Championships in June.

NHL

The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with Swedish forward Anton Frondell, who was the No. 3 overall pick in last month’s draft. The deal has a $975,000 salary cap hit.
