Scotts Valley native Dom Parrish (53 kilograms), Kayla Miracle (62 kg) and Amit Elor (68 kg) helped Team USA pick up three weight class quotas for the 2024 Olympic Games in women’s freestyle wrestling at the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier on Thursday night.
Parrish, the 2022 World champion, earned a wild 9-6 win over 2020 Olympian and 2023 Pan American Games silver medalist Laura Herin Avila of Cuba in the semifinals at Hotel Mundo Imperial in Acapulco, Mexico.
“There definitely was a little bit of pressure, just from my standing in Olympic Trails, and making sure the weight is qualified,” Parrish said. “And I get a nice, little bonus, so that’s pretty exciting.”
Trailing 2-0, Parrish unleashed an upper body attack to the back, which netted seven points in total — four for the feet-to-back score, two caution points for Herin Avila fleeing the mat on her back, and one for a lost Cuba challenge.
Herin Avila narrowed her deficit to 7-6 with a pair of takedowns in the second period. Parrish produced a takedown against her aggressive opponent at the final buzzer.
Earlier Saturday, Parrish topped Pan American Games bronze medalist Antonia Valdes Arriagada of Chile by a 10-0 technical fall.
Parrish will compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in April.
