At 62, Dean Devlin has scored as an actor, screenwriter, producer and showrunner but it’s his “The Librarian” series that seems to be immortal.

“It’s been, really, one of the joys of my life,” Devlin confirmed in a video interview. “We did the original ‘Librarian’ movie at TNT just over 20 years ago, and then we did three movies that were remarkably successful.

“I can’t think of any other made-for-television movies that are 20 years old that still sell every single year, over and over and over again.

“Then we got to do the ‘Librarian’ series” — starring Noah Wyle — “for four seasons. That was just fantastic. And now to be back home again at TNT getting to tell more stories in the Universal Library is an incredible gift.”

Yes, TNT is now airing a 12-episode new continuation of the franchise: “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” which like the original follows the adventures of the custodians of a magical repository of the world’s most powerful and dangerous supernatural artifacts. Newcomer Callum McGowan stars as Vikram Chamberlain, the Librarian.

What makes this a different “Librarian”?

“In the original three movies, we introduced the world to this idea of the magical library. But when we did the series,” Devlin explained, “we brought in a new element, this idea that there is an Annex, a way to access the library in a different location.

“That Annex was in Portland, Oregon, and that’s where we set the series. But when we were talking about the universe of the library, we thought, ‘If there was an Annex there, where else is there an Annex? When was there an Annex? And why was there an Annex?’

“That got us talking and we started playing around the idea of, ‘What if there had also been an Annex in Belgrade, Serbia, back in 1847? What would happen if that particular librarian got stuck in a time bubble and suddenly woke up today?’”

Why Belgrade?!

“We had been shooting a series there called ‘The Outpost’ and we fell in love with working in Belgrade. I mean, it has amazing crews, amazing locations. And we found that most people we talked to had no idea what Serbia was like. It was just kind of off the radar.

“We thought, if we were to set this in Belgrade, it would almost be like doing a show on another planet. Everything we’d show would be new, fresh and be interesting.

“The characters would be unusual and the magical artifacts would be very different than what we have done in the past. It just fed us a lot of creative ideas.”

As to what surprises people most about the series, “What has been consistent is that people who thought they wouldn’t like a show like this fall in love with it. People like the idea of finding a world that has magic in it.”
