Genealogy virtual lecture scheduled
Sign up to attend the online lecture “Introduction to use of DNA for Genealogy” hosted by the Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Public Libraries on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. As part of the County Lecture Series, genealogist Kate Penney Howard will be the featured guest speaker.
This program will present strategies for cracking the identities of your mystery DNA matches, such as those elusive distant cousins who don’t have trees. It will cover various logical approaches, how to glean information from your match’s profile, how free and paid resources can help uncover the facts and leave no stone unturned.
Specializing in brick wall research and endogamy, Howard will break down complex topics into relatable and digestible content. To register via Zoom, visit santacruzpl.libcal.com/event/14026524. Online registration via the SCPL website is necessary for viewing this event from home. Join the live stream in person in the upstairs meeting room of the downtown library at 224 Church St. For more information, visit scgensoc.org.

New exhibit to debut Feb. 15
The San Lorenzo Valley Museum is thrilled to present their newest exhibition, “The Way We Calculated,” opening on Feb. 15 at the Faye G. Belardi Memorial Gallery, 6299 Gushee St. The exhibition will run until June 15, with a reception on Saturday, March 15, from 2-4 p.m.
This exhibition will feature a plethora of artifacts and archives, most of which have never been seen before: devices to calculate board feet of lumber; adding machines used in local business; ledgers and inventories; and voting and population data. Topics explored will include: methods of counting and measuring; precision versus accuracy; notation and handwriting; and mathematical tables used in schoolrooms to surveyor offices, that were created by human computers.
Also on exhibition will be a model of Vannevar Bush’s 1931 differential analyzer — a mechanical analog computer that solves differential equations. Educators teaching calculus can arrange a private demonstration for their students by contacting the museum at info@slvmuseum.org. Hours are Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, 1-4 p.m.
