San Lorenzo Valley High’s football team pulled away from host Harbor in the second half and won 28-6 in its Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division opener on Friday night.

Sophomore running back Justin Griffis rushed for 100-plus yards and a pair of touchdowns for the unbeaten Cougars (5-0, 1-0), who are off to their best start since going 13-0 in 2002. Winston Wells also turned out some big runs, coach David Grant said.

Fausto Gonzales rushed for an 82-yard gain on a fake punt on Harbor’s first drive to set up quarterback Luke Griffin’s 3-yard scoring run.

The Pirates had the ball for nearly 10 minutes in the second quarter, but was unable to score. SLV led 7-6 at the half.

Gabe Machado had a touchdown reception and Jordan Renteria ran for a score for the Cougars.

“We played much better in the second half; we ran the ball well and played good ‘D,’ ” Grant said. “Justin Griffis, our running back, had his best game. Harbor played really tough. I give their players and coaches a lot of credit.”

SLV receiver Dom Aguilar hauled in “a clutch pass” from quarterback Jack Dagan on 4th-and-5 from midfield in the third quarter, Grant said.

“It was a close game at that point and I felt like that play gave us some much needed momentum,” he said.

The Cougars didn’t commit a turnover.

SLV’s Riley Johnson and Aguilar recorded interceptions.

Gonzales finished with 150-plus yards rushing for the Pirates, and teammate Maxwell Falconer had 100 yards receiving.

Om Oct 12, Harbor (1-4, 0-2) plays at Pajaro Valley (2-3, 1-0) at 12:30 p.m., and SLV hosts Marina (1-4, 0-1) at 1 p.m.

APTOS >> Dylan Guisado and Ryan Solorio rushed for touchdowns in the Mariners’ PCAL Gabilan Division loss on Friday night.

The Mariners, who trailed 28-7 at the half, threw a pair of interceptions and lost a fumble.

“They’re good,” Mariners coach Zach Hewett said. “But looking at this, the number of mistakes we made, there’s a lot of stuff to clean up and fix. It’s all within our control.”

Hewett said the Mariners moved the ball well at times and played good defense, but it was sporadic.

“You give a good team that many chances and you’re gonna have some problems,” he said.

Aptos (3-3, 0-2) plays Palma (3-3, 0-2) at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas on Friday at 7 p.m.

Alisal 24, MVC 14

SALINAS >> Senior quarterback Dominic Pierini suffered a knee injury in the final minute of the Mustangs’ PCAL Mission North Division loss Friday night.

The Mustangs will find out the severity of the injury on Saturday, after Pierini, who holds every major passing record in Santa Cruz County, goes to urgent care.

“I feel bad for him,” said Mustangs coach Spencer Ferrari-Wood. “Everyone knows we’re going to go as far as our quarterback takes us. … We’re hoping for the best. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and say our prayers for him.”

Pierini threw touchdown passes to Nico Downie in the first quarter and Jordan Ramirez in the second quarter.

Downie finished with eight receptions for 145 yards.

Ferrari-Wood praised the effort from his defense. Boston Ashe had a fumble recovery, Ramirez recorded an interception, and the Mustangs blocked two field goal attempts.

MVC (2-4, 0-2) hosts Scotts Valley (1-4, 0-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
