Lilacs can be a great fit for Marin

Ah, the lovely scent and beauty of the lilac!

Most, but not all, lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) require hours of winter chill. But, certain varieties like ‘Lavender Lady’ and ‘Alba’ can be grown in Southern California. For the Bay Area, French hybrids and Descanso hybrids can be grown successfully. Check with your local nursery for varieties.

Although lilacs require regular watering, withholding water in the fall may help with repeat flowering. All lilac varieties prefer alkaline soils and good drainage.

Lilacs require only light pruning after they bloom. If you prune in the summer or fall, you’ll remove the buds for next year’s flowers.
