As part of its “Every Day Counts” student attendance campaign, Woodland Joint Unified School District recognized the top three schools with the most improved student attendance for February.

According to a press release, the top three schools with the most improved student attendance for February were Whitehead Elementary School, Lee Middle School and Pioneer High School. Each winning school received an “Every Day Counts” banner to display and will have a DJ play at their school as a prize.

“We are proud of our Whitehead Eagles for much-improved attendance,” said Whitehead Elementary School Principal Alison Evert Monga. “This reflects both the commitment of our students and the dedication of our teachers, staff, and families working together to create a positive and supportive learning environment for every child every day.”

Lee Middle School Principal Shelley Friery celebrated the commitment of the Lee Middle School community in reaching this achievement.

“We are thrilled to be recognized for improving our attendance at Lee,” said Principal Friery. “We have been working hard to support our students and appreciate all of our families for ensuring their students are coming to school regularly.”

Pioneer High School Principal Sandi Reese highlighted the collective effort of students, parents and staff.

“PHS is so happy to have earned an attendance award,” said Principal Reese. “It is truly a team effort here, and we are so proud of our kids and parents for recognizing that each day counts.”

Research shows that missing just two school days a month can impact a student’s academic success while coming to school each day improves academics, boosts self-esteem and increases opportunities for college and a career.

Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin emphasized the importance of consistent attendance in helping students reach their full potential.

“Every day in the classroom is an opportunity for our students to learn, grow, and connect with our school community,” said Superintendent Ortega-Lampkin. “We are proud of our schools for making attendance a priority and thankful to our families for their partnership in ensuring students show up ready to succeed.”

WJUSD originally launched the campaign in January 2023 to improve student attendance districtwide. Each month, we recognize the top schools with the most improved attendance, and last school year, we added an “Every Day Counts” poster contest.
