MOORPARK — San Gabriel Valley athletes shined at the CIF Southern Section track and field championships on a cool and cloudy Saturday afternoon at Moorpark High. Five area athletes won individual titles in their respective divisions, with several others qualifying for next week’s CIF-SS Masters Meet.

La Cañada’s Maya DeBrouwer, arguably, had the most impressive day of any local athlete. The Stanford-bound senior won the Division 3 1,600 meters in a time of 4 minutes, 53.87 seconds and finished second in the 3,200 in 10:34.26. The 1,600 title was her first CIF championship. She finished third in both events last year.

“It’s been a good day,” DeBrouwer said after both races. “I’m really happy.”

DeBrouwer was tucked in fourth place in the 1,600 halfway through. She was then neck-and-neck with Reese Holley from JSerra with one lap to go before she threw down a powerful kick with 250 meters left to pull away for the win.

“I was supposed to leave with about 200 meters to go,” DeBrouwer said about her finishing kick. “But I left at like 250. I wasn’t going for a fast time. I was going for the win so it was very strategic.”

The reason why DeBrouwer didn’t earn two wins was because of friend and Rio Hondo League opponent, Abigail Errington of South Pasadena. She won the 3,200 in 10:17.49. Errington, who will run for Princeton next year, led the race from start to finish. It was her second CIF championship. She won the Division 3 1,600 crown last season.

“I feel pretty good,” Errington said. “We went out fast. It was a good effort. I got the divisional win. I got outleaned a little bit at the end. It obviously stings, but it’s good motivation for the future.”

The Division 3 3,200 was combined with Division 2. The Division 2 winner, Summer Wilson of Irvine High, ran 10:16.90, narrowly passing Errington at the end of the race.

That Division 3 3,200 was a Rio Hondo League sweep with South Pasadena senior Saidh Byrne finishing third in 10:39.19, which was a personal best. Byrne will run for UC San Diego next year.

“This week I wanted to break 10:40 and I did that,” Byrne said. “I ran 10:39 and was proud of that performance.”

Even though Errington and DeBouwer have competed against each other in the Rio Hondo League the past few years, they are not bitter rivals. The two are friends who constantly root for each other.

“We feel like team Rio Hondo, honestly,” a smiling Errington said. “When I don’t win but Maya does well, I’m like ‘Eh, Maya did well. It’s fine.’”

“Especially in the big races like in CIF and state when we don’t have our teammates there, (Errington) is like my adopted teammate,” DeBrouwer said.

Covina senior Kaylei Combest won the 100 hurdles in Division 3 with a time of 14.59 seconds.

“I’m really happy,” she said after her win. “Over the years, I’ve been at the bottom and I’ve had injury after injury. I’m really happy I got what I wanted and set a personal record.”

Combest is referring to nagging hamstring injuries that plagued her for multiple seasons. She even said it bothered her earlier this season.

Combest will run her first CIF Masters Meet on Saturday at Moorpark High. She laid out her goals.

“To qualify (for CIF State) and PR,” she said.

South Pasadena’s Omar Soufi won the Division 3 shot put title with a heave of 58 feet, 5 inches. Flintridge Prep’s Declan Mansbridge won the Division 4 1,600 in 4:16.97. He cruised to a win as second place was more than four seconds behind.

Bonita’s Max McCune nearly won the Division 2 100 crown. However, he was edged by Torrance’s Nicolas Obimgba by just three thousandths of a second.

Damien junior Jaxson Gates ran 10.44 in the 100 to finish second in Division 3. He’ll be off to the Masters Meet to try to improve on an already impressive time.

La Serna’s Grant Miller finished second in the Division 1 1,600r race in 4:07.51 and placed third in the 3,200 in 9:11.25.

La Cañada senior Katie McGuinness competed in three events. She placed second in the Division 3 long jump with a leap of 18-9 1/2. She finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-4 and finished sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.83.

Arcadia junior Charlotte Hopkins finished third in the Division 1 3,200 in 10:31.76.

Monrovia freshman Isla Terrill looks to replace Errington, DeBrouwer and Byrne as the next dominant Rio Hondo League distance star. She finished third in the Division 3 1,600 race in 4:55.33 and fourth in the 800 in 2:14.52.
