DENVER-AREA weather

Storm to arrive today, could bring heavy snow

A storm that has the potential to drop 6 to 12 inches of snow in the Denver area arrives this afternoon.

While it is possible for Denver to see the heavy snow, forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder said there is still a lot of variability in the possible outcome of the storm.

About 30% of the forecast models showed the heaviest snow possibilities, but many more showed little to no snow falling between Denver and Fort Collins.

The main variables are a possible barrier jet and precipitation rates.

Temperatures in Denver will still stay fairly mild, with highs in the 40s through the weekend.

The mountains have the highest confidence of heavy snow, where up to 20 inches could fall in some areas.

A winter storm watch has been issued for elevations above 9,000 feet.

Snow will begin this afternoon and likely will continue through Saturday night.

The foothills also could see heavy, wet snow Saturday that causes slick and dangerous travel conditions.
