ANAHEIM — Canyon boys basketball coach Nate Harrison credited his coaching staff for formulating a brilliant game plan for the Comanches’ Crestview League game against La Habra.
Then Harrison praised his players for executing the plan to near perfection in the Comanches’ 81-64 victory over the Highlanders on Friday at Canyon High School.
Canyon senior Brandon Benjamin topped his 30.5 points per game average, scoring 35 to lead the Comanches.
Benjamin, a University of San Diego commit, hit mid-range jumpers, fall-away jumpers and scored while being double- and triple-teamed.
The Comanches (15-4, 2-0), who are ranked No. 7 in the county, also ran plays designed to get the ball to Benjamin under the basket, where he scored on uncontested layups and dunks against the Highlanders (18-5, 2-1).
“Our kids shared it and they were about winning instead of worrying about their own stats and that is really important for us,” Harrison said. “Credit to Brandon. He’s just such a great player that makes everybody better. Everybody played a really good game.”
Benjamin’s scoring by quarter went like this: six, eight, 11 and 10, respectively.
Canyon also executed its game plan on the defensive end of the court, Harrison said, especially in the second quarter, when the Comanches outscored the No. 6 Highlanders 22-7, to take a 35-21 lead at the half.
“That’s when we really took off,” said Canyon point guard Staf Yilmazturk, who scored 13 points and made three 3-pointers. “We just had to apply the pressure from the jump, like right from the beginning. Once we did that, they couldn’t really close the gap. And we just took off from there and we just closed it out.”
The Comanches held on to the double-digit lead the entire second half, building it up to 20 points at one point.
La Habra went on a 11-4 run in the third quarter to get to within 10, but then Benjamin went on a 7-0 run to put the Highlanders back up by 17.
The Highlanders went on a 6-2 run early in the fourth to get to within 14, when Benjamin scored to stop La Habra’s run again.
Acen Jiminez led the Highlanders with 23 points and was 7 of 7 from the free-throw line.
Canyon’s victory avenged a 13-point defeat against La Habra in a tournament game on Nov. 23, after the Comanches had lost a double-overtime game against La Mirada the day before.
“We definitely remembered that game,” Harrison said.
The Comanches and Highlanders will play again in the second-to-last league game of the season on Jan. 28.
