Several Macomb County swimmers participated in the Division 2 state swim and dive championships this past weekend, which were held at Oakland University on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15.

Ford’s Max Dexter swam in and won the Division 2 championship race in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.75, becoming a state champion in the race.

One of his top rivals, Fraser’s Hunter Lemmon, finished third in the state with a 20.81 time.

“Every year Hunter and I go back and forth,” Dexter said back in February after he set the Macomb County meet record in the 100 with a time of 46.77.

“It’s really fun having that good competition. I was thinking about that race when I was swimming the 100. I wish Hunter had been in that, too. It would have pushed us both really good.”

Dexter also swam in the 100 freestyle, placing second with a 43.73. It was just .28 behind the gold medalist from University of Detroit-Jesuit.

Lemmon earned bronze in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.23.

Both Dexter and Lemmon are seniors.

Lakeview’s Keith Wright finished 14th in the 50 with a time of 21.89. The MAC Red’s Brady Bond of Grosse Pointe South placed 10th (21.81).

The Fraser 200 yard medley relay team of Lemmon, Landon Keil, Jack DePerro and Brody Roberts placed 15th out of 16 teams in the Division 2 finals, finishing the consolation final in a time of 1:40.01.

De La Salle’s Oliver Russell swam in the 100 yard butterfly final, placing 13th with a time of 53.16.

From Lakeview, Tyler Deubel swam in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing 13th with a time of 4:51.01.

The Huskies’ 400 yard freestyle relay team — which includes Deubel on the anchor behind Keith Wright, Klei Muhameti and Brody Mergener — finished 16th with a time of 3:22.30.

Overall, Ford finished 17th overall with 37 points. Fraser was right behind them in 18th with 36. Lakeview was 26th (nine points) and De La Salle placed 32nd (four points).

The Division 1 finals were in Holland and the Division 3 races were at Eastern Michigan. No Macomb County athletes were in either division.
