SANTA CRUZ >> The Santa Cruz Police Department announced on social media Wednesday morning that officers are searching for a suspect in a sexual assault incident that occurred Tuesday.

According to the post, Santa Cruz police responded to a report from a resident of the Effey Street area of Seabright Tuesday evening, who said she woke up to find a stranger in her residence sexually assaulting her. When the victim screamed, the suspect fled the scene and the victim called 911.

The suspect was later seen jumping a fence in the direction of Broadway and notifications were sent to residents of the area. Officers conducted a yard-to-yard search of the neighborhood, which lasted two hours but the suspect was not located. The Capitola Police Department implemented the use of a drone in the search.

According to the statement, Santa Cruz Police Department detectives are actively investigating the incident and are asking area residents who have outdoor security cameras, doorbell cameras or any recording devices to review their footage and contact the department if anything suspicious appears.

The suspect is reported to be a white man, approximately 6 feet tall, thin build with long blond hair. The suspect was wearing a plaid or flannel jacket, a tie-dye shirt and gray pants.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen or heard anything is encouraged to contact Investigations Sgt. Josh Trog at jtrog@santacruzca.gov.
