Cam Ward found Isaiah Horton with a 1-yard touchdown pass with 1:57 left for what became the winning score, and No. 7 Miami rallied to beat Virginia Tech 38-34 in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams on Friday night in Miami Gardens, Fla.

The ending was controversial: Officials deemed that Da’Quan Felton caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Kyron Drones amid a crowd of players from both teams as time expired, which would have given Virginia Tech the win. The call was overturned after a long review.

Ward threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns, extending his national lead to 18 scoring throws so far this season. The Hurricanes (5-0, 1-0) trailed by double digits on three separate occasions, the last of those when the Hokies went up 34-24 with 12:05 left.

But Miami found a way at the end — barely — to win its ACC opener for the first time in four years and remain unbeaten.

Rutgers tops Huskies to stay unbeaten

Kyle Monangai rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown as Rutgers improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2012 with a 21-18 Big Ten victory over Washington on Friday night in Piscataway, N.J.

Former Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis passed for 114 yards, including a 15-yard rouchdown pass to Ian Strong that gave the Scarlet Knights a 14-3 lead in the second quarter.

The Huskies, the national runners-up last season, had a chance to send the game into overtime on the final play, but Grady Gross missed a 55-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds.

The Gophers also got goals from Emma Kreisz and Chloe Primerano as they took a 4-0 lead in the first period.

Megan Woodworth got the lone goal for UConn. The teams play again on Saturday.

Internationals tie up Presidents Cup

Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im tied a record for the biggest blowout, and Si Woo Kim polished off a most perfect day as the International team produced a sweep of its own tie the Americans in the Presidents Cup in Montreal.

“Incredible,” Adam Scott said. “Incredible day for us to come back and show everyone what this team is made of.”

A Presidents Cup that started out looking like another American victory took on an entirely different feel before a Royal Montreal crowd that was chanting “I-N-T!” from the opening tee.

Unlike the American sweep in fourballs Thursday, most of the foursomes matches weren’t even close. The Internationals only trailed in one match, and that was only for one hole.

Patrick Cantlay and and Xander Schauffele, 3-0 in foursomes at the Presidents Cup, never stood a chance against Matsuyama and Im. The Internationals birdied their final seven holes, a staggering streak considering they were alternating shots, for a 7-and-6 win.

King to receive Congressional medal

Billie Jean King is now the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation Thursday to recognize King for “a remarkable life devoted to championing equal rights for all, in sports and in society.”

The bill to honor King, the tennis Hall of Famer and activist, passed unanimously in the Senate and then in the House of Representatives.

The bill was introduced last September on the 50th anniversary of King’s victory over Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes,” still the most-watched tennis match of all-time. The medal, awarded by Congress for distinguished achievements and contributions to society, has previously been given to athletes including baseball players Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, and golfers Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson and Arnold Palmer.

King had already been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
