Arkansas shortstop Wehiwa Aloy won the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player in the nation, USA Baseball announced Saturday.
Aloy is the third Arkansas player to take home the prize, joining Andrew Benintendi in 2015 and Kevin Kopps in 2021, and the 12th winner from the Southeastern Conference — most of any league.
Aloy, the SEC player of the year, started all 65 games this season and led the Razorbacks in almost every major offensive cateogy, including slugging percentage (.673), OPS (1.107), hits (93), doubles (19) and home runs (21). He was second on the team with a .350 batting average and 68 RBIs.
He made just five errors in 229 total chances (.978) and helped turn 31 double plays.
Aloy was named an All-American by four major publications and finished the season with a run to the College World Series semifinals. He batted .324 with eight runs, 10 RBIs and five extra-base hits in nine NCAA Tournament games.
Golden Spikes winners are chosen in voting by national baseball media, select professional baseball personnel, USA Baseball staff and previous winners.
TENNIS
Marketa Vondrousova upset top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-4 in their semifinal Saturday to set up a showdown with Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu in the final of the Berlin Open.
Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, needed 1 hour and 21 minutes for her first win over a reigning No. 1.
Sabalenka staged a comeback Friday by saving four match points against Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. She had won all seven semifinals she played in this year but couldn’t find a response against the 164th-ranked Vondrousova, who missed three months of the season with a shoulder injury.
Today’s final will be Vondrousova’s first since she won at Wimbledon. Wang beat Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 6-1 in their semifinal earlier Saturday to move into her first final.
Daniil Medvedev ended home favorite Alexander Zverev’s hopes of grass-court glory with a 7-6 (3), 6-7 (1), 6-4 win in their Halle (Germany) Open semifinal on Saturday.
Medvedev recovered from squandering three match points on Zverev’s serve at 5-6 in the second set and took nearly 3 hours to get past his old rival and reach his first final in 15 months.
“I could have done much better when I had the break in the second but it is normal,” Medvedev said. “The same happened in the third set that when I had the break, he started playing better, returning better. I am happy that in the third set I managed to stay more composed and managed to save those break points.”
It’s Medvedev’s fourth consecutive win over Zverev and it extended his lead to 13-7 in their head-to-head series.
The Russian player will face Alexander Bublik — who beat top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the second round — in today’s final.
Bublik, the 2023 champion, fired 18 aces as he defeated Karen Khachanov 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the other semifinal.

U.S. forward Haji Wright will miss the rest of the CONCACAF Gold Cup because of an injured left Achilles.
Wright, a 27-year-old from Culver City High School, scored in the 84th minute of last weekend’s opening 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, 11 minutes after entering. He did not play in Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Soccer Federation said he will return to Coventry City for evaluation and treatment.
U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said Wright arrived from the League Championship season with the Achilles problem.
Wright cannot be replaced on the tournament roster. The U.S., which already has clinched a quarterfinals berth, plays Haiti today in the Americans’ group stage finale.
“The problem increased the pain,” Pochettino said.
It’s unclear whether midfielders Tyler Adams and Johnny Cardoso will he healthy enough to start today. Adams (turf toe) entered in 62nd minute against Saudi Arabia and Cardoso (illness) entered in the 89th.

The Chicago Blackhawks acquired Andre Burakovsky from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for fellow forward Joe Veleno.
Chicago also placed defenseman T.J. Brodie on unconditional waivers for purposes of buying out his contract.
Burakovsky, 30, had 10 goals and 27 assists in 79 games with Seattle last season. A Stanley Cup champion with Washington in 2018 and Colorado in 2022, he has 153 goals and 234 assists in 696 regular-season games over 11 NHL seasons.
The acquisition of Burakovsky gives Chicago some additional size and scoring, and the trade creates more flexibility for Seattle with the salary cap.
The 6-foot-3 Burakovsky was selected by Washington with the No. 23 pick in the 2013 draft. He signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract with Seattle in July 2022.
Veleno, 25, was traded from Detroit to Chicago in March. He finished with eight goals and nine assists in 74 games last season.
The Florida Panthers’ Stanley Cup championship festivities have included an all-night celebration at a popular beach bar; crowd surfing, pole climbing and impromptu karaoke at a Miami nightclub; a Brad Marchand appearance at Dairy Queen; a few team dinners and a boat ride.
That’s just so far. They insist they’ve got more in them.
“We’re not toning it down,” defenseman Aaron Ekblad said. “We just won two Stanley Cups in a row. We deserve to have a good time.”
The Panthers also partied hard after winning the franchise’s first title a year ago. But some players have described those days as a surreal whirlwind of first-time experiences. This time around, the celebrations are different, as the reality of what they accomplished set in.
“There’s a different feeling to it,” coach Paul Maurice said during the team’s exit interviews. “Last year was more of a dream. ... That’s the right word. It was a dream come true. It was euphoric. This year, it was an achievement. It was hard. It was hard all year. It was hard at camp. There were just so many places that if we had broken at that point or failed we would’ve all understood — ‘OK, we did our best. We just couldn’t get it done.’ We never let that happen.”
The coaches’ celebrations, Maurice noted, have been much more subdued compared to last year: They had their first post-championship dinner as a staff Friday night. They joined some players on a boat ride.
“I haven’t had a hangover yet,” Maurice said, “so way ahead of where I was last year.”
Maurice heard about his players’ celebrations from his wife, who has shown him a few viral social media posts here and there.
Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov said they’re giving themselves “permission” to celebrate more freely this year because they have already been through the experience.
“And don’t get me wrong, it’s still amazing,” he added, “but now everyone knows how to sit back a little and enjoy it, because last year was so hectic. Like it happened to you for the first time ever, and you had been dreaming about it for so long.”
