


The top-seeded Banning baseball team opened the L.A. City Section Division I playoffs Thursday with a 10-1 win over LACES.
AJ Herrera pitched five innings to get the win for the Pilots (20-8).
Angelo Duarte had a pair of hits, a double and drove in two runs. Brandon Villarreal also had two hits and drove in two runs and Pedro Ibanez-Eddy had a pair of hits and scored three runs.
Banning will host No. 8 Garfield in the quarterfinals today at 3 p.m.
San Pedro 11, Hamilton 0 (5 innings): Anthony Solis pitched a no-hitter for the fourth-seeded Pirates (14-14) in a game that ended after five innings because of the mercy rule.
Tyrus Wilson had a pair of hits and drove in four runs.
San Pedro will host No. 5 Verdugo Hills in Saturday’s quarterfinal at 1 p.m.
Carson 15, South Gate 5 (5 innings): The Colts (16-13) scored seven runs in each of the first two innings in a game that was ended after five innings because of the mercy rule.
Carson’s Xavier Allen drove in five runs, Noah Sandoval had three hits and Damian Ruvalcaba drove in three runs.
Carson will host No. 7 Palisades today at 3 p.m.
Also in Division I, No. 14 Roosevelt upset No. 3 Narbonne 5-3.
Port of Los Angeles 6, Grant 5: The seventh-seeded Polar Bears (12-8) scored two runs in the sixth inning to advance to the quarterfinals.
Joaquin Guerrero drove in three runs for POLA, which will host No. 15 Sherman Oaks CES today at 3 p.m.
Bishop Montgomery 8, West Covina 0: Pierson Howe struck out 11 to lead the Knights (18-11) to a win the first round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs.
Sean Yanko drove in three runs, Logan Hudson had two RBIs, Derek Peters had a pair of hits and Ethan Peterson scored three runs.
The Knights will travel Tuesday to play Elsinore in the second round.
